This corrugated iron house was built by contractors Wills & Reeve to house workers on the construction of Immingham Dock which began in 1906. This example was eventually removed to the Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum where it now houses the transport toy exhibits.

An empty house at Andamooka which is an opal mining town north of Roxby Downs in outback South Australia. Many of the houses here are partly underground due to the fierce heat in summer.

Derelict house close to the road to Goldsitch Moss in the Staffordshore Moorlands end of the Peak National Park. The site is known as 'Sniddles'. Just look at the size of the flagstones used for roofing. Most of this roof has collapsed since I first recorded the building in 2009.

A house at Paleisheuwel alongside the Klawer branch of South African Railways in the Western Cape. Corrugated iron is such a practical material for walls and roofing here.

Broken Hill is probably the corrugated iron capital of New South Wales with a large proportion of the city built with the material. This is particularly true of the houses built by and for the miners who work(ed) there, with whole streets of wonderful corrugated iron houses each with its own distinctive character. This is the miner's 'tinny' in which we stayed during our sojourn in this amazing place. In 2015 Broken Hill became the first Australian City to be added to the National Heritage List.

This terraced row on Ashbourne Road in Leek harks back to the days of cottage industry with a series of garret rooms on the top floor. These would have housed hand looms for weaving silk cloth. The long windows were designed to allow maximum light into the room. Since I took this photo most of the windows and doors have been replaced with plastic.

Terracotta decoration on a house in Chester Road, Sandycroft. I believe that the terracotta is probably from the nearby Aston Hall Coal & Brick Co which certainly supplied the glazed wall capping for the walls to all the houses along the road in this area.

Victorian originality is a rare beast indeed when it comes to terraced houses and this example immediately caught my eye whilst walking through Macclesfield. The door, fanlight and windows are still in original form. Use of stone step, sill and lower facing is contrasted with the brick facia, arch and lintel work. I am advised that the brickwork is in Flemish bond with queen closers. It is unlikely that the door and windows will survive when the property is "modernised".

This unusual concrete house is on the hillside above Bradwell in Derbyshire. The layout of doors and windows at the lower level suggests that this may once have been three small houses but it is certainly only one today.

28 Lower Bridgeman Street, Bolton. The firm are listed at this address from 1938 to 1955. In 1916 Mary Gordon, cork importer, had premises at 46 Castle Street, and in 1927 the firm were at 31 Church Wharf. Now demolished.
