A peacock butterfly. Although common in Europe this is very unusual in Canada. They arrived in the Montreal area in 1997, probably carried across the Atlantic on a container ship, and have slowly gained a foothold. The caterpillars eat nettles, another immigrant species that has flourished in its new home, and clearly the species can survive the harsh winters.

These are Jagged Ambush Bugs. Despite appearances they are not mating; this is the "mate guarding" position with the male riding on top of the female to prevent other suitors gaining her attention. When (if?) they mate, the male will slide off the female's back and consummate the relationship holding on to her from the side. As the name suggests they ambush prey insects feeding on the flower. In the Southern Quebec region there are two species that are hard to tell apart, but by far the most common is Phymata americana.

The caterpillars have been munching through the sacrificial nasturtiums we planted for them, and have mostly left everything else alone.

The butterflies are usually very skittish, but this one tolerated me poking my macro lens in its face for a while before flying off.

Spotted this one in a neighbours garden and manage to get a couple of shots before it scuttled away. If you look closely you can just see a pair of wings near its mouthpart, which I think means it's was just finishing off an aphid lunch.

There's a shot from a slightly different perspective in the PiP. Thanks for looking!

Dragonflies in flight

I thought photographing birds in flight was difficult, until I tried going after dragonflies! I was pleased with this one, though.

Top to bottom: A male rather ragged Emperor Dragonfly defending his patch; a Brown Darter; and a second, fresher looking Emperor a little upstream. Worth zooming is a bit to see the detail.

My wife was very patient waiting for me to get my shots, and helped explain what I was doing to passers-by on the canal who saw me pointing the camera at random, apparently empty spaces!
