Dodging the showers

Whilst out and about in the White Peak of Derbyshire we found this Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) dodging the showers at Harboro Rocks near Brassington. On returning an hour or so later he had flown off.

It may be nearly November but there are still some dragonflies to be seen as the weather has remained fairly warm and we have avoided frosts so far this autumn. This male Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) was busy feeding alongside the Macclesfield Canal at Middlewood.

I spotted this little dragonfly at the side of the path in north-eastern Myanmar, but I have no idea what species it is. All suggestions gratefully accepted.

One of the objectives of today's dragonfly excursion was to photograph the Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum). This male was seen before the day became so warm that the insects became to flighty to approach.

A good day out looking at dragonflies in Cheshire. This rather battered male Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator) obligingly landed near to where I was standing and stayed until a butterfly disturbed it.

Common Hawker

Today I spent the afternoon surveying ponds on the moors and had hoped that I might see a few Common Hawkers (Aeshna juncea) even though there wasn't a lot of sun about. In the event I very nearly trod on this male before I spotted it. It was well settled and not warm enough to fly off immediately and this gave me the opportunity to take a few shots. The blurred forewings are due to the insect indulging in some vigorous wing whirring to generate enough heat in its muscles to allow it to escape. A few seconds after I took this shot it was off in search of a less disturbed place to roost until the sun returns.

A male Brown Hawker Aeshna grandis tucks in to a breakfast fly on Saltersley Moss this morning. His wings may be a bit battered but this has not affected his flying and catching abilities. He was keeping a close eye on me and was off before I could venture any closer.

Female Black Darter Sympetrum danae taking the morning sun on a piece of ancient bog wood at Saltersley Moss. There were still plenty of these about today.

Hairy dragonflies

It was a fine sunny day for looking at dragonflies and a trip to west Cheshire yielded plenty of action. These are a tandem pair of Hairy Dragonflies (Brachytron pratense) at a marl pit in Churton.

Male Emerald Damselfly (Lestes sponsa) at Bennerley, Notts. This clearly shows the tendency of this species to keep the wings partly open when landed.

The Small Heath butterfly (Coenonympha pamphilus) is not all that common, although it can still be numerous given the right habitat of rough dryish grassland. There were several flying today on my walk in the hills above Macclesfield.

A rather battered Painted Lady butterfly (Cynthia cardui) basking on a rock in the hills above Macclesfield. Having flown from Afica or southern Europe along with thousands of others that arrrived in the UK recently, it is not surprising that it has suffered a little damage on the way.

Six-spot Burnet Moths (Zygaena filipendulae) at Bennerley, Notts. Attached to the other side of the stem is the empty chrysalis case from which had emerged one of the abundant examples of this species seen at this site.

Whilst tidying up the files on my hard drive I discovered lots of Odonata shots that I hadn't yet processed. One of my favourite species is this little beauty - the Downy Emerald (Cordulia aenea). This one is a teneral female seen at Newchurch Common.

Male Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis) flying over marlpits at Tiverton near Tarporley. Winged death if you are a small insect in its sights. Even at 1/640 the wingbeats were faster than the camera.

We don't often get dragonflies in the garden here at Tarboat Towers but this morning we were graced by a female Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) feeding along the hedge. The resident Speckled Wood butterflies appeared to be unimpressed.
