detail of the terracotta in the main entrance hall built to waterhouse's spectacular if poorly planned designs in the 1870s; his layout gave no thought to utility, but allowed him his cathedral-like entrance hall. street likewise got away with this anachronism in his law courts; at least here in this museum a white elephant is perhaps forgivably apt.
