This Tampa, Florida cigar box boasts an interesting label featuring a mythological matron bringing a slain warrior home to Valhalla.

In ironic contrast to its spiritual imagery is a proclamation on the bottom of the label that "Science produced it."

The treatment is noticeably less severe than labels which feature native American males.

Cigar boxes which feature native American maidens are slightly scarcer than their male counterparts, and no less desirable to collectors. Moreover, they seem to be more light-hearted treatments, as evident on the Washtella brand cigar box from Pella, Iowa.

Compare this whimsical, antique "Dairy City" cigar label from the late 1800's to a mechanically printed postcard postmarked 1912 and you'll see many of the same buildings on old Franklin Street, looking north, in Manchester, Iowa.

Manchester is a town of roughly 5,000 people on old U.S. route 20 in Delaware County, eastern Iowa.

The cigar label was printed by the famed lithoghaphers, G.S. Harris & Sons, located in Philadelphia, and came from an old Victorian scrapbook.

Featured here are the side labels of three different versions of Henry George cigar boxes, dating from the turn-of-the-century to the Great Depression.

The interior views - which follow this photo in my photostream - show the evolution of the brand.

Henry George was a nineteenth-century American writer and philosopher whose famous work, Progress and Poverty, examines social and economic inequality.
