There are several vantage points ranging in height from 25 to 30 metres throughout the undulating landscape, where one can enjoy breathtaking vistas. Because the Renderklippen nature reserve is located far from major cities, it is one of the few places in the Netherlands where it can still be really dark at night.

Afterwards, the sand extraction lakes and the surrounding land were developed into a recreational area covering 650 hectares. The largest lake - Stooterplas (main image) - is up to 35 metres deep.

One third of Het Twiske consists of water and offers plenty of opportunities for swimming, diving, surfing and sailing. For nature lovers, it is a place for cycling, hiking and horse riding and in a varied landscape.

Tiengemeten gets its name from the “gemet,” an old surface measure, about half a hectare. This island originated around 1600 as a small sandbar of about 10 “gemet” (= Tiengemeten in Dutch).

Since 1997 Tiengemeten is owned and managed by Natuurmonumenten (a Dutch society for preservation of nature monuments).

The river with its amny bends is the artery of Utrecht and supplies water to the Oudegracht and the canals. Normally, seven cubic metres of water per second pass through Amelisweerd estate (Bunnik). When it rains heavily, this can increase to as much as twelve cubic metres. Rainwater then flows from the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Utrecht Hill Ridge) to the Kromme Rijn via various ditches.

Until 1930, the Kromme Rijn was the main transport artery for goods and people between Wijk bij Duurstede and Utrecht. Where the provincial road now runs, there was previously only a muddy cart track. The boats were pulled by people. Until 1870, the journey between Wijk bij Duurstede and Utrecht took about six hours.

For more than 8,000 years, trees grew luxuriantly here in the wet, marshy landscape. Until 1871, when the last tree was felled and the area was transformed into agricultural land with meadows and fields.

Natuurmonumenten - a Dutch society for Preservation of Nature Monuments - was able to purchase this area and has been working to restore nature since 2006. This has created a varied area with grasses, reeds, shrubs and trees. In recent years, the terrain has developed back into a marsh landscape. Due to the high water levels and the many pools and ponds, it is wet and marshy.
The cliffs consist of deposits of light-coloured calcareous marine organisms and skeletons of siliceous organisms. Subsequent movements of the Earth's crust pushed these deposits up and brought them to the surface. Erosion by sea, wind and frost formed the characteristic rock arches and needles in the sea.

The cliffs around Étretat seem perennial, yet are fragile and constantly changing: wind, tides, infiltration of rainwater, freezing and then thawing weaken them. As a result, landslides occur regularly and the cliffs crumble.

They have become the impressive rock formations that can be seen today, such as the Falaise d'Amont/Cliff of Amont (main image, PiP 1and 2), Falaise d'Aval/Cliff of Aval (PiP 3 and 4), Falaise la Manne Porte/Manne Porte Cliff (PiP 5) and the Aiguille Creuse/Hollow Needle (PiP 6 and 7).

The waterfall is located east of the village of Hinang (not very well signposted) between Oberstdorf and Sonthofen.

We visted there in winter, reaching the waterfall after a walk from the road of about 15 minutes. It is not only the water that thunders down, but also the moss that covers the bizarre shapes of the rocks, the water that drips down everywhere and the countless icicles.
