Paphos - Archaeological Park

With an urban population of 55,000 Paphos is the fourth-largest city in the country.

According to Pausanias, Agapenor of Tegea, on his way home from Troy, built a temple to Aphrodite in Paphos. Archaeological evidence traces Paphos' prehistory back to the late Bronze Age. A settlement must have existed there since the 15th century BC. Rich grave goods now attest to the city's prosperity. Paphos was spared the destruction that occurred towards the end of the Bronze Age.

The settlement of Nea Paphos was founded at the turn of the 4th to the 3rd century BC. During the Hellenistic period, it was part of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, later, it was ruled by the Romans. From around 200 BC to 350 AD, it served as the capital of Cyprus.

After Ptolemy's conquest of Cyprus, the kings of Paphos retained only the office of High Priest of Aphrodite. Later the sanctuary of Aphrodite was under the patronage of the Roman emperors. Despite severe damage from earthquakes, the temple survived until the 4th century AD.

In the mid-7th century, the city was plundered by the Arabs. During the Byzantine period, the city fell into decline.

The city has been excavated under the direction of Polish archaeologists since the 1960s. Among the most significant remains discovered are four large and elaborate Roman villas:
the House of Dionysos, the House of Aion, the House of Theseus and the House of Orpheus, all with well preserved mosaic floors.

The "House of Dionysos" was built in the late 2nd century CE. Although only the lower walls of the house survive today, the villa is famous for its well-preserved mosaic floors. In total, the villa contains about 185 m² of mosaics, demonstrating the wealth and cultural sophistication of the villa’s owner.

Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, has a long history, that starts around 8000 BC, but later there were Phoenician, Carthaginian, Greek and Roman periods. After the Roman Empire had fallen apart the Vandals tried to take over the island but failed. Finally, the Ostrogoths took possession.

Mid of the 6th century Sicily was conquered by troops of the Byzantine Empire. After the advent of Islam, Sicily got attacked by the Arab forces. Raids seeking loot continued until the mid-8th century.

A Muslim army was sent to the island in 827 but met with much resistance. So it took a century to conquer it and even later revolts constantly occurred

In 1038 the Byzantines invaded the island supported by Norman mercenaries, led by Roger. In 1072, after the siege of Palermo, most of Sicily was under Norman control. Roger´s son Roger II raised the status +of the island to a kingdom in 1130. During this period, the Kingdom of Sicily was prosperous and powerful,

The court of Roger II became melting out of culture from Europe and the Middle East. This attracted scholars, scientists, artists, and artisans. Muslims, Jews, Greeks, Lombards, and Normans cooperated and created some extraordinary buildings.

In 1186 the last descendant of Roger, Constance of Sicily married Emperor Henry VI, the second son of Barbarossa. So the crown of Sicily was passed on to the Hohenstaufen Dynasty. Frederick II, the only son of Constance, was crowned King of Sicily at the age of four in 1198. He became "Stupor Mundi", one of the greatest and most cultured men of the Middle Ages.

Palermo, founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians, became a possession of Carthage and later was part of the Roman Empire. From 831 to 1072 the city was under Arab rule. Following the Norman conquest, Palermo became the capital of a new Kingdom of Sicily and the capital of the Holy Roman Empire under Emperor Frederick II and King Conrad IV.

The "Palazzo dei Normanni" (aka "Royal Palace") was the seat of the Kings of Sicily during the Norman domination. The building was the imperial seat of Frederick II and Conrad IV.

The first building here was probably started in the 9th century by the Emir of Palermo. After the Normans conquered Sicily in 1072, the palace was chosen as the main residence of the kings. The Normans transformed the former Arabian palace to their needs. In 1132 King Roger II added the famous "Cappella Palatina" to the complex.

Large parts of the were rebuilt later and added in Aragonese times, but some parts of Roger's palace survived. This part is named "Torre Joharia" a word deriving from Arabic "aljawhariyya" = "precious","jewelled". One of the rooms here is the "Sala di Ruggero".

Taken at Marwell Zoo. As usual it was tucked up amongst the rocks and trees right at the top of the enclosure. Impossible to get a shot without the fence in it. I tried cloning out the fence, but it just looked a mess.

Minutes before taking this photo, we witnessed this leopard having an intimate moment with his lovely lady friend! Some modesty was shown, and they went into some tall grass, making the photography a bit difficult, however, we respect the fact that some animals might be shy about some things. Afterwards, he relaxed in the shade, looking very proud of his conquest.

Jo spotted the leopard while it was sitting on the ground, near the base of the tree. We stopped and watched, and after a few minutes, it stood, stretched, and leapt in to the tree. There, in one of the lower forks, was an impala carcass. Something caught earlier, and dragged off the ground for safe keeping. It seems we had arrived at dinner time.
