A pair of QJ class locomotives head west towards Lindong with a short freight on the Jitong Railway. This sort of open vista is typical of this section of the line.

QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives nos 7163 and 7143 arrive with a westbound freight at Lindong which is a small town halfway between Chabuga and Daban on the Jitong railway. The town is actually situated a couple of miles from the station where a small community has developed along with a zinc smelting plant. Freight trains often stopped here to take water and to shunt the sidings.

Lindong South Pagoda

This pagoda at Lindong stands on a hill overlooking the railway station. Lindong was the site of the Superior Capital of the Liao Dynasty which ruled over Northeast China, the Mongolian Plateau, the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, southern portions of the Russian Far East, and the northern tip of the North China Plain between 916 and 1125 AD. The pagoda is contemporary with this period.

A westbound freight headed by QJ 7010 and another on the Jitong Railway between Chabuga and Lindong. Finding this one on the hard drive reminded me of a happy trip around north-east China in April 2005. Steam only lasted a few more months after this on the Jitong line.

This kiln at Lindong (Bairin Zuoqi), in the Mongolian Autonomous Region of China, is burning lime for local use in mortar and possibly for agricultural purposes. The three-wheeler in the draw tunnel has replaced wheelbarrows for moving the product.

This kiln at Lindong (Bairin Zuoqi), in the Mongolian Autonomous Region of China, is burning lime for local use in mortar and possibly for agricultural purposes. The plume of smoke rising from the pot is about as exciting as the process gets as the burning takes place about half way down.

QJ 7049 lays a smokescreen over Lindong station area as it gets a westbound freight underway after prolonged shunting operations. The second locomotive is QJ 6905 which is not in steam and is being moved back to Daban after overhaul.

QJ 7007 approaching Lindong with a westbound freight on the Jitong Railway. Although this line is best known for its double-headed trains, the Chabuga to Lindong section with its easier grades would regularly see single locomotives on some workings.

Late afternoon glint on QJ 6911 at Lindong with the westbound passenger service over the Jitong Railway. The crew take advantage of the station stop to test the wheels and rods with the tapping hammer and also apply a little oil to the motion.

Westbound train a short distance before arriving in Lindong on the Jitong Railway. This particular trip proved short of sun at critical moments and short of trains at others. Still, it was worth waiting on the hill taking in the view whilst waiting for the train to arrive.

The use of running kilns of this type has long ended in the UK with only abandoned structures remaining. In China they are still very much in use in rural areas such as here in the Mongolian Autonomous Region. The process is fairly unspectacular and the stone is gently cooked over many hours. The pot is seen filled to the top with layers of coal and limestone and the barrow used for moving the raw materials standing by for the next charge.

Westbound tanks

QJs 7119 and 6977 slog westwards on the Jitong Railway towards lindong with a heavy train of tank wagons. The train arrived before I had reached my preferred position and I had to run to get near enough to the curve to get it into the shot with the train. This was the last photo of the day even though it was only midday, as the line seemed to go into suspended animation after this with no trains until after dark this day. It was a frustrated bunch of photographers that arrived back at the hotel that afternoon.

Lindong is a small town half way between Chabuga and Daban on the Jitong railway. Freight trains often stopped here to shunt wagons on and off the train and to take water.

After such a stop a pair of QJs leaves the loop regains the road westwards with a long train.
