The Mercers Company, one of the liveries of London, owns lots of land in Covent Garden and I often see the Mercers' Maiden on buildings there. I was surprised to learn that they also owned land in Islington in the area around the Whittington Stone. The Mercers built Whittington College in 1822 on Archway Road to replace almshouses built there by Dick Whittington in 1424.

Apothecaries' Hall. I always thought that apothecaries were pharmacists, but the Master explained to us that most of their members are doctors. He is one of only a few pharmacists to be named Master.
