Chiswick House was buily for thr Earl of Burlingyon and finished in 1729. The gardens were mainly designed by William Kent.

London, Ontario has many attractive old buidlings of white brick with carved gable trim and bargeboards. The carved tree trunk is a memorial to C. S. Hyman, for whom the street was named; the carver was Neil Cox.

For more information about Hyman, you can click the PiP at top left, which will take you to a description of his many accomplishments.

London, by the way, has an official tour of carved tree trunks, but I think you're meant to just drive around to the trees yourself. Save some time and just drive along Hamilton Road in southeast London, where almost all the tree trunks are. But, of course, we can't admit that it's a southeast London project, can we? When I tell people the neighbourhood in southeast London I grew up in they jump back as if I'm going to rob them. But its reputation is a highly exaggerated version of the truth. Anyway, if you drive along Hamilton Road you can also visit the Buddhist centre in the other PiP.

Guess what -- the market in London, Ontario is called Covent Garden. The iron trees here are part of an installation of 60 metal trees by Bill Hodgson called "Metal Trees of the Carolinian Forest"; the trees were installed around downtown between 2007 and 2009. Many objections were raised by members of the public, the chief one being that since London already had over 120,000 real trees of the Carolinian forest, adding metal ones seemed like a work of supererogation. But eventually four times as many as had been planned were installed. The yellow tree on the left is a trembling aspen, the green tree in the middle is a white pine, and the blue one on the right is a white oak. The size of your oak and aspen leaves may vary. I have always been part of the school that thought planting real trees would have been better, but this corner is engrossing. I also took some photos of the trees with traffic lights that I find quite interesting and may post them eventually.

London has another installation on a sylvan theme -- one of carved tree trunks. I hope to get round to them.

On the left is the Bank of England (Sir Herbert Baker, 1939, retaining the outer wall by John Soane, 1833). In the middle behind the fellow on the bike is the Royal Exchange (Sir William Tite, 1844); peeping up above its roof is its clock tower with its weathervane, the Gresham Grasshopper. Sir Thomas Gresham founded the Exchange in the 16th century and the crest of his coat of arms was a grasshopper. Also peeping over the roof to the right of the clock tower is 30 St. Mary Axe (Foster + Partners, 2004; popularly known as the Gherkin)), and to the right of it is the Leadenhall Building (2014, Rogers Stirk Harbour +Partners) under construction. The Leadenhall Building is popularly known as the Cheesegrater. There's another big glass building (22 Bishopsgate) back there now looming over the left side of the roof.

Thanks to Phil Sutters for pointing out that my original identification of the Cheesegrater as the Shard was incorrect. That isn't the first time Phil has helped me with identifying things and I appreciate his helpfulness.
