Lower Yellowstone Falls from Uncle Tom's Trail

These are all older photos and this is one I posted years ago. They were all taken from Uncle Tom's Trail, a trail that includes a staircase of 328 steps that descends three quarters of the way into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The trail is named after a concessionaire who built the original staircase. The trail is on the south rim of the canyon and has been closed the last few times we were in Yellowstone, thus these older photos.

The three photos I've posted today were all taken along the North Rim Drive of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The first two photos show the canyon from Lookout Point and the last the Lower Falls from Grand View. The colors of the canyon are the result of hydrothermal activity and explain the name of the park.

Lower Yellowstone Falls from Red Rock Point

Following the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to the east there is a trail and a road along the rim of the falls and side trails to various viewpoints. This was taken from Red Rock Point, a short but steep trail part way down into the canyon with one of the best views of the Lower Falls. The Lower Falls are 308 feet tall (94 meters) while the Upper Falls are 109 feet (33 meters). The insets show another view of the top of the falls and several photos from the trail.

Lookout Point is at the end of the road along the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. There is a trail from the point down into the canyon to Red Rock Point from which trail this photo was taken.

Taken from Red Rock Point, reached by a short but steep trail, these are the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River dropping 308 feet into the canyon below. The viewpoint at the brink of the Lower Falls is visible on the right.

This is part of the trail down into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to Red Rock Point one of the viewpoints along the north rim of the canyon. My wife and two grandchildren are at the top of the trail.

Taken along the trail to Red Rock Point in Yellowstone National Park, this unnamed stream soon drops into the canyon below. Red Rock Point is at the end of a short trail into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone from Lookout Point on the North Rim Drive.

First, thanks to all of you who've patiently view my photos with their insets of Upper Michigan. They mean a great deal to use since we had not been back there since our honeymoon 43 years ago. We found things changed, of course, and we've changed a great deal, but the area still holds many memories for us and its beauty is still breathtaking.

In a previous post I mentioned that there are both an Upper and Lower Falls at Tahquamenon. The Upper Falls are Michigan's largest falls but these, part of the Lower Falls are also very beautiful. They are two series of cascades around a small island, which can be visited only with a rowboat, something we did 43 years ago and did again recently.

This part of the Lower Falls is on the east side of the island and is actually two falls (see the first inset) with cascades above and below. Here, too, the brown color of the water is evident and is the color of the tannins leached from the surrounding forests and especially the cedars. I assume that they also are the cause of all the foam on the water.

These are the two falls that make up the eastern part of the Lower Falls of the Tahquamenon River in Upper Michigan. The river flows around a small island here and there are cascades on both sides of the island which can be reached only with a rowboat when the water is high. It's obvious from the photo that I was having trouble keeping the spray off my camera lens but I thought I'd post the photo anyway.

The Tahquamenon River flows northeast here and flows around a small island on both sides of which are the cascades that make up the Lower Falls. We had rowed across to the island and were walking around it when this photo was taken. Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Lower Tahquamenon Falls is best seen by renting a rowboat and crossing the basin below the falls to a small island in the middle of the falls. That is what we did when we were there recently and these photos were all taken from that island. There is another part of the falls on the other side of the island and this is only one set of cascades. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is in Michigan's Upper Peninsula near Lake Superior.

If you look carefully you'll see the son with whom we were traveling perched in the dead tree leaning out over the river. Since he was small he has climbed everything in sight, often giving near heart-failure. His wife just shakes her head, as she did here. The photo was taken from the island in the middle of Lower Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Lower Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are made up of two sets of cascades on either side of a small island in the middle of the Tahquamenon River. These are some of the cascades on the northwest side of the island.

These are more of the cascades on the northwest side of the island that lies in the middle of the river at the Lower Tahquamenon Falls. Thaquamenon Falls State park is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Lake Superior.

This and the next photo show the same set of cascades the make up a part of Lower Tahquamenon Falls - not as spectacular as the Upper Falls, but still beautiful. The photos were taken from a small island in the middle of the falls and the maps that accompany these photos show the different places on the island from which the photos were taken. The falls are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
