The Clocktower in Macclesfield was built in 1871 as the administration block and part of the former Parkside Hospital (earlier known as the Macclesfield Union Workhouse and West Park Hospital). The stone chimneys are notable. It has now been converted to apartments and is listed Grade II.

This weekend saw the Macclesfield Model Railway Exhibition and amidst the large array of excellent layout was Kerrinhead. Set in the 1920s this former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway branch terminus was presented by Scalefour Society members Gavin and Helen Clarke. These are the coal drops, a feature I haven't often seen modelled.

Boathouse

This is one of the last remaining corrugated iron boathouses on the Macclesfield Canal. These structures were common from the small skiff type of the early 20th century to the ones that held cabin cruisers in later years. The last ones are to be seen on the High Lane Arm which is leased to the North Cheshire Cruising Club. They are disappearing because they are too small to accommodate the modern steel narrowboats that are in the majority today.

M H Watts, engineers and founders, Regent Iron Works, Catherine Street, Macclesfield.

The business started in 1810 when Messrs Stringer and Green opened a machine shop in Catherine Street. A foundry was added to the works c1816/1820. Martin Watts married Anne Green and in the early 1840s was manager of the works, subsequently buying the business in 1847.

Watts' foundry produced iron castings up to 30cwts from the cupola furnace and a variety of non-ferrous castings in a pit furnace. The business finally stopped production in the 1970's by which time it was in the ownership of Peter Allmand Smith, the son-in-law of Percy Watts. The premises have since been converted to apartments.

Adelphi Mill

The Adelphi MIll is one of the significant landmarks in Bollington and whilst the chimney was dismantled some years ago, the future of the building now seems secure. The mill was constructed alongside the Macclesfield Canal but water transport was almost immediately superseded by the Macclesfield Bollington and Marple Railway which ran behind the mill.

It was constructed circa 1868 by Martin Swindells, a local cotton spinner who also owned Clarence Mill in Bollington, he built The Adelphi Mill for his two sons, hence the name 'Adelphi', which is Greek for brothers.

The Mill, which was built adjacent to the Macclesfield Canal began life spinning cotton, but was soon converted to the production of fine silk. During the Second World War, spinning ceased in the Mill and all work was turned over to the production of parachutes. At the end of the sixties the Mill was bought by Britax for the production of webbing for motorcar seatbelts, this continued until the late eighties. The Mill was then sold and converted to offices and workshop uses.

Old industry remembered in this wall on Charlotte Street West in Macclesfield. The blocks are made from copper slag from the smelter that was operated in the town by Charles Roe's Macclesfield Copper Company in the later 18th century.

Entrance to commercial premises created around 1900 in a house of c1750 on Chestergate in Macclesfield. In the 1906 Kelly's trade directory John Duncalf Cooper is described as a surgeon dentist.

Steam trains on the line between Kidsgrove and Cheadle Hulme are a rare event and it is many years since the last one passed through Macclesfield. 'The Mancunian' run by the Railway Touring Company was too good to miss and with 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' at the front it is seen heading north alongside the Bollin at Macclesfield's Riverside Park. The line is downhill here and it was a very warm day which meant no exhaust from the locomotive.

Sponds Colliery lies across a moor some 1100ft up in the parish of Lyme Handley. in the nineteenth century the land was in the ownership of the Legh's of Lyme Hall and the coal mines were let for many years to James Jackson, a farmer from Pott Shrigley. He worked the Sweet Seam via a series of pits which he sank as the workings moved from north to south across the moor. This shaft was around 300ft deep and may have been in operation in the 1870s or early 1880s. The whim winding gin stood just behind the photographer. Along the trackclose to the wall in the background can be seen the spoil from another shaft.

Eddisbury Hill Colliery was operated by J T Brocklehurst & Sons Ltd of Hurdsfield Mills, Macclesfield, presumably to provide coal for boilers although some fireclay was also worked here. It seems that the pit was sunk soon after 1918 and in the last year of coal winding (1923) employed 3 men underground and 2 on the surface. This is the magazine for the pit which was a landmark from the Buxton Road until demolished a few years ago when the pit spoil heap was also levelled.

Years ago I used to drink in here. It was a good locals pub that served an excellent pint of Marston's mild. There was a framed image of 92220 'Evening Star' on the wall too! Of course it couldn't last and the pub has been closed for a long time. I presume it's flats now. James Street, Macclesfield.
