Almost hidden in the forest is this memorial. I happened to know about it from a Flickr picture I came across in the past, but there was no mention of the memorial on the trail into the park or in literature about Paoli. When I first started hiking into the forest, I passed a woman and we chatted, but she didn’t know the location of the memorial. When I had hiked the road/trail to its end, I saw two more trails leading off into dense woods, but nothing indicating which trail to take or how much further to go. Exasperated, I was heading out when there was a couple walking towards me (I had seen no one else in the forest) and I asked them if they knew anything about the wall. They were very helpful, pointing me to the right trail and giving me a general estimate of how far to go.

The woods were so dense that I didn’t see any hint of the wall for quite some time, but began to see it above the trail (this picture)

I began to think of the memorial’s condition as sort of sad, given its fairly heroic message, but also seemingly fitting given the long history of the thankless work given by women to establishing culture and society.

The memorial wall is substantial in size (roughly 5’ high), but clearly not tended at all, with nothing nearby to provide any explanation.

Such is marked the trail of 1500 Roma and Sinti (colloquially referred to as gypsies) who were moved in May, 1940 from a prison camp on this side of the river, to a train station on the other side of the river, for deportation and, for 1000, to an extermination camp.

For Armistice Day:

Veterans Memorial, Palatka, Fl. The memorial consists of three fountains flowing down the slope, the subsequenc fountains are seen in the background.

From the placard:

This memorial is raised not for the cause of war, nor for the prizes of victory: rather, it is dedicated in honor of the men who fought and died for freedom.

While war is abhorrent to all civilized men, conflict is often necessary for the achievement of peace. To this proposition, our sons have often given their lives.

For their sacrifice, it is only proper that that those who still live should always remember those who so nobly went forth for the cause of peace , that they may not have died in vain.

“Memorial to the Fallen 1940-1945,” erected in 1957. The woman is described as representing the grief of the past, the man on the outside with a shovel represents the reconstruction after WWII, and the other man and child represent the link between the past and reconstruction. Inscribed on the memorial is “Sterker door strijd”, the motto of the city of Rotterdam, which translates to “Stronger through Struggle.”

Roughly translated, saying that in 1942 and 1943, 686 Rotterdam Jewish children aged from one month to 12 years old were among those deported. They were all murdered in Auschwitz or Sobibor. (see # 0127, nearby, for introduction).

On April 19, 1914, the miners in the colony and some of the militia celebrated, together, Greek Orthodox Easter. On the next day, April 20, gunfire between the militia and the striking miners erupted at about 9AM and lasted through the day, ending with a torching of the miner’s tent colony by the militia. To avoid the gunfire, the women and children in the camp hid in dirt basements that had been dug under the tents; the majority of deaths were family members who burned to death in those dirt basements.

The basics of the Ludlow massacre are relatively simple. The miners lived and worked in deplorable conditions, including winter in a tent city near the mine (see the information in the poster pictured above). The UMW was attempting to organize coal miners across Colorado and the miners at Ludlow were on strike. The coal companies had company guards and the Colorado National Guard on their side. (see next photo)

In honor of American Labor Day, a post about the labor movement.

Finding the Ludlow labor movement memorial was one of my main goals on this trip. From various web sources it seemed like it was going to be on unmarked dirt roads and difficult to find, neither of which were true. There are multiple signs on I-25 and access roads pointing you to it, and a clearly marked UMW parking lot at the site.

A surprisingly hidden park in downtown LA. The park commemorates the complex, difficult, and very successful life of Biddy Mason who was born into slavery and died as one of the wealthiest women in Los Angeles.

Mason was born into slavery in Georgia in 1818 and not freed until 1856 when her master took her to California and a sympathetic judge freed her (California forbid slavery). In slavery she learned to be an expert nurse and midwife, occupations which she maintained throughout her life. BUT, being that she was in California, she became wealthy in the California way – through owning real estate in the developing area of Los Angeles at the same location as what is now the park. Though having explored LA culture and specifically its downtown for 20+ years, I had never heard the story of Biddy Mason and would not have discovered the park if not being led to it by a friend who had, himself, only recently discovered the park. (The memorial was erected in 1989)

Biddy Mason Park is in an alley-like space that is literally between Broadway and Spring in the 300 block (between 3rd and 4th). The easiest way to find it is to go to 333 S. Spring and walk through the arcade at that address, you’ll find the park at the back of the building. The prettier way to reach it is through a tiny tree-lined park running alongside a restaurant as 332 S. Broadway, again is at the back of the building. There are NO street signs pointing you towards the park.
