the lady chapel , built like those of peterborough and bristol to the north of the choir, was originally a mass of colourful sculpture and glass. built 1335-53 after a false start at foundations in 1321. some of the design probably dates from the earlier date.

heraldic details on gloucester chantry of mid c15. duke humphrey was regent of england during henry 6's minority, and was his uncle, hence the almost royal arms and antelope supporters. the only difference on the shield was the thin bordure argent.

this great west front of the first half of the c12 was originally to have two clasping towers. the original ranks of smaller norman windows were replaced by a big one, this one dates from 1686. the straight parapet and spirelets are c17 replacements too
