Apparently this is the most expensive tomb in Nunhead Cemetery. Monument for John Allan (1790-1865). 1867. Sculptor: Matthew Noble. Allan was a ship builder. According to a cemetery plaque, “His son and partner, Col. Jon Harrison Allan was an amateur archeologist. This monument seems particularly fitting as West Norwood is on the site of the ancient Great North Wood. According to wikipedia, "A tree survey of the cemetery in 2005 identified one oak which is thought to date from 1540-1640. Fourteen more oaks, a maple and an ash tree were identified that predate the foundation of the cemetery in 1836."

Kensal Green Cemetery. Sir Marc Isambard & Isambard Kingdom Brunel (and a few other Brunels). Grade II listed monument. Someone had recently laid a bunch of lilies on the grave -- the smell was intense. I was a bit disappointed by the tomb. I would have thought such important engineers would deserve something grander, but as the tomb says of the elder Brunel, "He has raised his own monument by his public works."
