Known as ski resort, Val d'Isere is much less busy in summer time. The "Funival" is the only funicular in Val d'Isère and provides access to a platform under the Bellevarde rock summit (ca. 2700 m). Historically, it is the first underground funicular in France. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

The Tignes Dam, also known as the Chevril Dam, is an arch dam on the Isère in the Rhône-Alpes. In planning since the 1920s and under the protest of locals, the dam was constructed between 1948 and 1952 with the purpose of hydroelectric power. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest dam in Europe. Water from the dam's reservoir, Lac du Chevril, feeds two power stations, the 96 MW Brevieres Power Station and the 332 MW Malgovert Power Station, for a total installed capacity of 428 MW. Near to the Furkapass east ramp and hotel Belvedere is the mighty and beautiful Rhone glacier. I inserted a PiP with the newest Google Street Map view. The retreat is horrible. The red line, which I have drawn, marks the glacier in 1997. The Bernina Railway is a single-track 1000 mm gauge railway line forming part of the Rhaetian Railway. It links St. Moritz, Switzerland, with Tirano, Italy, via the Bernina Pass. Reaching a height of 2253 m, it is the highest railway crossing in Europe and the third-highest railway in Switzerland. It also ranks as the highest adhesion railway of the continent, and – with inclines of up to 7% – as one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world.
