This little village is up in the mountains to the west of Phonsavan and that is the main road. I've tried to locate this on the map, but without success. Either way, we stopped here for a visit and to meet some of the local residents. The (clickable) PiP is taken looking past the house to the right from the same position.

Back to my archives! On our little boat, heading upstream (toward the left) from Luang Prabang, this other boat passed heading the opposite way. I should explain that this was taken in the wet season and the Mekong was running at high levels.

Sunset on the Shoalhaven

An evening view of the upper Shoalhaven valley, the setting for much of the bushranger story, taken from our former property. View large.

In mid-1866, the government appointed three bounty hunters as "Special Constables" to find and apprehend the bushrangers. After operating, supposedly secretly, they proved ineffective and were withdrawn. In September 1866, a second party of four were given "Special Constable" status. Heading to Braidwood, they pretended they were in the area as surveyors and set up camp near the Clarke household. What could possibly go wrong?

Back in the 1860s, in the Araluen Valley, there was a little gold mining settlement called Mudmelong, somewhere near where the distant house is sited. On the night of 23 February 1866, the Clarke bushranger gang took over the hotel there. When the four local police tried to capture the bushrangers in the hotel, things went badly astray - and the bushrangers captured the police. Oops! (After the bushrangers left, the police were able to return home next day).

Yangtze gorges

Heading down the Yangtze River through the Three Gorges, apart from the impressive landscape we were surprised by the amount of shipping. The Three Gorges Dam has raised the river level substantially, making the channel much wider than before it was built - and the "high water" mark is very visible on the rock faces. Island transport

The island has only about 8km of road and very few vehicles. There also is an absolute speed limit of 25 km/hr. Most tourists hire bicycles and there are bicycle parking racks at popular spots. The main job for the one policeman is enforcing the Australian rule that cyclists must wear helmets (these are provided with the cycles). It's all very relaxed...... :-) I'd suggest viewing large.
