Clifford's Tower was the site of a Pogrom in 1190 A.D., but otherwise it's history is no more hideous than any other Norman military building. That means there was a bloodbath of one sort or another every few years, but it was no big deal, really. :-) It was originally built in 1068, and survived less than a year before being burned down by rebels, as it was originally built out of wood. The Normans didn't learn their lesson, though, and rebuilt it out of wood, instead brutalizing the population of York in retaliation, and we all know from recent events how well that works at quelling an uprising. The castle came under attack so often that it was finally rebuilt in stone in the latter part of the 13th Century, after having been burned down again in the Pogrom. It got its current name in 1322, when one Roger Clifford was hanged there, and in the 1660s (I'm not clear on the exact date) the wooden interior of the castle burned out, leaving little left inside that wasn't within the stone structure of the walls. It's nevertheless open to the public, even though it doesn't look it.

It bothers me, in a way, that I didn't have a medium format camera when I took this. I rotated the photo 180 degrees, though, as the "U" shape created by the church against the sky simply looks better this way, in my opinion. I apologize for the poor quality of the scan, though, as you can see scanner lines in the sky. The original, of course, doesn't have this problem. :-)

I love the way the light outlines the boiler, as well as the crisp detail of the illuminated areas, and the contrast is also near-perfect, even if the ground detail is somewhat limited. On many of my prints of this shot, I've burned the ground in, of course, and it looks like I did the same with this one.

I shot it with either Kodak Tri-X or Ilford Delta 400 (I don't remember which), and then I cranked up the contrast after scanning it. In the original prints, I eventually did the same with filters, but the print I scanned was kind of soupy.

These are all Class 130 electrics from the 1970s, built by Skoda, and they're not particularly fast or impressive, although it should be noted that they still are important in Kralovsky Kraj, the region in question, working locals and freights, out of line with the norm of EMUs handling local services. Notice the water spout between the units on the right!!!! Ceskoslovenske Drahy (the old pre-1993 operator) didn't get rid of steam until 1982, and many of their steamers are still in mainline excursion service, so a lot of the steam infrastructure is still in place, up to and including roundhouses and steam shops!!!

Many photographers like to photograph just the belltowers, omitting the row of unrelated buildings that face the square, as the church is crammed into back streets and is itself hard to find the entrance for. It was constructed with funding from German merchants in 1385-1511, and although it was eventually taken over by Catholic Jesuits, it is just as much associated with the Hussite movement. It is also known for being the burial place of the Danish astronomer Tycho de Brahe, who died in Prague in 1601.

The locomotive (this one, as well as ex-NYC #8223) had been run around, and I took this picture of the cab before reboarding for the trip back to Utica.

It was one of a series that I still regard among my best black and white photos ever taken of a steam locomotive. This is my favorite one because it shows off the details the best of the series, in my opinion, and it is a little bit more abstract than the others, even if it's still clearly a steam locomotive smokebox. I used a Nikon N6006 with a Nikkor 35-50 zoom and Kodak Tri-X 400 film. I had just learned to shoot proper black and white in the semester or two before I shot this, and this was my first real success with black and white rail photography, so that also adds to the significance of this. Hopefully sometime in the future I'll get around to posting the others.

I've always liked this shot, even if many "serious" photographers haven't. It is a bit abstract, as you can't see the features of the train, so it's more an emotional than a "tech" shot. I hope you like it. :-)

This one was an exception, though, even if I'm not particularly fond of black and white landscapes. Even if I'm not Ansel Adams, I actually like it. It's of the River Sazava (if I'm not mistaken), although quite a few kilometers south of Prague. I took this from a steam excursion train on Linka (mainline) 210 from Praha Branik-Cercany(or Dobris). Of course, if this is really the Vltava, somebody please correct me, but I'm pretty sure it's the Sazava.

They say it's "boring," but most of them aren't railfans! From the technical point of view, the contrast is a bit low, but since it was a gloomy Plattsburgh winter day, if I were to up the contrast on this, the detail and the grit of the scene would be lost. For the railfans, though, it's a nice shot of an F40PH in the last years of F40 haulage on Train #68, the "Adirondack."
