Last spring when traveling to pick up our daughter in Las Vegas, we stopped for a morning at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada and did some hiking there. The photo was taken along the Seven Wonders trail which went through a shallow slot canyon.

Taken late spring in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada while hiking the White Domes trail in the northern part of the park, the photo shows that the park is well named.

This is part of Kaolin Canyon in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada. We were hiking a series of trails, including the White Dome Trail, in the northern part of the park, when the photo was taken.

This photo was taken in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada along the Seven Wonders Trail. We were in Valley of Fire on our way to the Grand Canyon for a week of hiking and backpacking with our daughter. We picked her up in Las Vegas and went on to Grand Canyon.

In May we traveled through Utah, Nevada and Arizona and among the places visited, we saw Valley of Fire State Park In Nevada. We hiked a number of trails there, among them the Fire Wave Trail, which brought us to these striking formations known as the Fire Wave.

This is the Fire Wave in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. We hiked the trails in this area of the park before going on to Las Vegas airport where we picked up our oldest daughter for a week of hiking at Grand Canyon National Park.

Bighorn Sheep

We are in the area of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, visiting family. Their internet is very slow and so my postings are a bit sporadic. Nor will I be posting at all next week since I will be backpacking with my son-in-law and two grandsons to Mount Assiniboine.

This photo was taken in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada and shows a group of Desertd Bighorn Sheep. The Desert Bighorn is a subspecies of Bighorn Sheep and is found in the American Southwest and Mexico.

Indian Petroglyphs

These Indian petroglyphs were photographed in Fire Canyon Wash in Valley of Fire State Park. They were made by the Anasazi and Southern Paiute who lived in the area and are scratched into these darkened areas known as desert varnish. There are many such example in the park and the surrounding areas.

This arch and view through it were at the end of the Rainbow Vista trail in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, one of the places we explored on our recent trip to Utah, Nevada and Arizona. The viewpoint is known as the Fire Canyon Overlook.

We hiked a number of shorter trails in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. This photo was taken along the Rainbow Vista trail and shows some of the Red Aztec Sandstone formations for which the valley is known.

We visited Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada on our way to Las Vegas where we picked up our oldest daughter and went on to Grand Canyon National Park for a week of hiking and backpacking. This is Elephant Rock near the east entrance to the park, one of numerous shorter hikes we did.

My apologies for disappearing for a few days. We traveled to Edmonton to see our daughter and her family and grandkids take precedence over photos. We are enjoying them and learned that we have another on the way, our 34th grandchild.

The photo was taken in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, east of Las Vegas. We visited there part of a day before picking up our oldest daughter at the Las Vegas airport and going on to Grand Canyon National Park with her.

Feral Burro

There are over 2000 feral burros in Death Valley National Park, the descendants of burros brought in by prospectors before Death Valley became a national park. They are a huge problem in the park since they eat the available vegetation and displace the native wildlife. This wild burro was photographed just outside the park between Rhyolite and Beatty, Nevada, in the Amargosa Valley.

The Tom Kelly Bottle House is in Rhyolite, Nevada, a ghost town just outside of Death Valley National Park. The house was built in 1906 by Tom Kelly, an Australian goldminer using around 50,000 bottles. After building the house he auctioned it off and the Bennet family who won the auction lived in it from 1906 to 1914. It is now

Traveling from Death Valley to Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge we saw these sand dunes in the distance, but our information warned us of the danger of getting stuck without a four-wheel drive vehicle, so we had to be content to view them from a distance.

The town of Rhyolite, Nevada, was a mining town that grew up and then died in the early 1900's. It is in the Bullfrog Hills northwest of Las Vegas. Gold was discovered there and the town boomed. At its peak, around 1907, it had a population of 10,000 with a railroad station and fifty saloons, but by 1920 after the mines ceased production there were only 14 residents. The town is now a tourist attraction with its ruined buildings and has become a site for weird open-air sculptures.

Rather appropriate, I thought, with Halloween coming, this statue is one of many in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Nearly abandoned for many years it now boasts a number of rather strange sculptures which have become a tourist attraction.
