Rothley station on the Great Central Railway has been restored as it would have been in the early 20th century and is lit by gas lamps. This gives it a fabulous atmospheric feel in the late evening in winter. Here BR Standard 5 73156 waits to depart for Leicester near the end of a Gala weekend.

An early Sunday morning photo session outside Tata's Port Talbot steelworks. No stunning sunrise just half-light gradually increasing.

Morfa coke ovens closed in March, Blast Furnace 5 (on the right) closed in July and BF4 closed last weekend. This ends Port Talbot's ability to produce liquid iron from ore. Around 2,800 staff from Tata's 8,000 workforce stand to lose their jobs.

My wife and I treated ourselves to dinner on The Charnwood Forester which departed behind new-build A1 4-6-2 60163 Tornado at 19.00 and made two trips to Leicester North while we ate. It was excellent.

This shot was taken at 20.40 after arriving back at Loughborough on the first trip. It highlights 60163's under carriage lighting!

A shot from the January 2012 GCR Gala. I was rostered on GCR O4 2-8-0 63601, its last major Gala before withdrawal in June when the boiler ticket expired.

This was taken around 7.00am when we were prepping the loco on shed.

Best viewed large and in the dark!!

The action is all over and we are disposing our engine on the Sunday evening after another very successful Gala. Great Western Railway Hall 4-6-0 4953 Pitchford Hall quietly simmers on Loughborough shed. My driver, the late Don Palmer, is checking round before I drop the ashpan.

Great Central Railway O4 2-8-0 63601 gets up steam on shed at Loughborough in the early morning of the second day of the GCR's Winter Gala. I was taking a short break from prepping M7 30053 at the time.

63601 was withdrawn for overhaul later in June 2012 and currently the bottom end is in the shed at Loughborough and the boiler is on the ground in the yard both being worked on by the full-time shed staff.

Seen in a foggy Loughborough shed yard, visiting engines S15 4-6-0 506 and British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73082 Camelot being prepped on shed at Loughborough on the last morning of the Winter Gala weekend. I was pulling down coal in the tender after lighting up.

Early morning atmosphere on shed at Loughborough with British Railways Standard 2 2-6-0 78018 raising steam for the Santa Special trains. Not my engine though as I was rostered on 9F 92214 in the yard beyond the bridge.

An evening walk through old Aylestone. The view from the 13th century St Andrew's churchyard of the farmhouse on Old Church Road which is dated 1723.

Aylestone was a village 3 miles south of the city from Saxon times until 1891 when it was incorporated into the Borough, now city, of Leicester.
