The Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant (LSEP) is an Energy from Waste facility which is currently under construction at the Lostock Works site near Northwich in Cheshire, formerly the coal fired power station for Lostock Works. It will export 69.9MW of electricity to the grid using residual waste (the waste material remaining once materials that can be recycled have been removed) as a fuel. It was was due to open in 2025 but is running behind schedule.

LSEP Ltd is a joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and FCC Environment.

Pipe bridge over the Trent & Mersey Canal opposite the Brunner Mond/Tata Chemicals works at Lostock Gralam. At the time the works was producing soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride and associated alkaline chemicals. The pipelines are controlled by INEOS Inovyn who operate the nearby Holford brinefield.

Storage silos at the Tata Chemicals Lostock Works on the edge of Northwich. The end of soda ash problem here was imminent and this is probably no longer in use.

A last look for me at the shaft limekilns on the Tata Chemicals Lostock Works at the edge of Northwich. With the ending of soda ash production these kilns will be shut down and demolished.

Night time draws in at the Winnington chemical works limekilns. The CHP plant chimneys are to the right. The kilns have since been demolished since the ending of soda ash production at this location.

With the imminent demise of soda ash production at the Tata Chemicals Lostock Works on the edge of Northwich, I thought a farewell visit was in order. The plant was hard at work with plenty of steam from the lime plant seen centre rear. The crane and new steelwork showing at the left rear is associated with the construction of an energy from waste power station due to open in 2025 but probably running behind schedule.

The limekilns at the Winnington works of Brunner Mond & Co are now demolished. There were originally six shaft kilns which were extended to nine in the 1950s. It seemed that they would be there for ever.

Derelict loading chutes at the Wallerscote chemical works. Coasters used to load soda ash and sodium bicarbonate here. Now it is all gone and housing rises in its place.

The recent announcement that the Brunner Mond works of Tata Chemicals at Lostock is to close at the end of January 2025 will bring an end to the production of soda ash in the Northwich area. No longer will the limestone trains run from Tunstead and area every day as they have since, I think, 1878. These massive limekilns will soon be replaced by executive housing or some similar nonsense. Soda ash for bicarbonate of soda production at Winnington will in future be imported from the USA!

Looking over the Anderton Boatlift to the Tata owned Brunner Mond chemical works at Winnington. Soda Ash is no longer made here and the plant seems to be concentrating on the production of sodium bicarbonate.

Winter sunshine on the Brunner Mond soda ash plant at Winnington viewed from Winnington Bridge. Soda ash production has long ended here and the limekilns and much other plant has been demolished.

Soda ash storage hoppers at the Wallerscote works of what was Brunner Mond and Co, Northwich, Cheshire. Coaster used to load here at the wharf on the River Weaver. All now demolished with houses already built on much of the site of the Wallerscote works.

Winnington soda ash works of Brunner Mond back in 2008. Soda ash production has since ended here but the works continues on a lesser scale producing other chemicals.
