A panorama of the Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Cumbria. The site currently directly employs about 10,000 people, and is owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) which is a non-departmental public body of the UK government. Following a period 2008-2016 of management by a private consortium, the site has been returned to direct government control by making the Site Management Company, Sellafield Ltd, a subsidiary of the NDA. The site is due to be fully decommissioned by 2120 at a cost of £121bn.

The Chapelcross nuclear power station near Annan, was very similar to Calder Hall. With 8 x 30mw generators it did not make large quantities of electricity, but it was the main source of weapons grade plutonium for Britain's nuclear weapons. Commissioned in 1959 this magnox station came off line in 2004. The four cooling towers that stood behind the reactor halls were demolished a few years before I took this photo in 2009 during decommissioning.

Torness Power Station

The Torness station has a capacity of 1,364 Mw based round 2 x Mwe generators. This was the last second generation nuclear station built in the UK having started construction in 1980 and commissioning in 1988. The design of the power station is identical to that at Heysham.

According to Wikipedia: Sellafield houses "the most hazardous industrial building in western Europe" (building B30) and the second-most (building B38), which hold a variety of leftovers from the first Magnox plants in ageing ponds.
