With temperatures hovering around -40C the opencast coal mine at Jalainur was filled with the exhaust steam from the fleet of SY class locomotives that worked there.

Orenstein & Koppel excavator and face shovel at the Cutacre opencast coal mine at Little Hulton, between Bolton and Wigan. UK Coal was hoping to extract 900,000 tonnes of coal here.

RWE Power operate the Inden opencast mine with the output of Brown Coal going to their nearby power station. The Inden mine in the Aachen City Region extends from the municipality of Aldenhoven and the A 44 (Düsseldorf-Aachen) motorway in the north to the A 4 (Cologne-Aachen) motorway in the south. In 2017 there were reserves of 260 million tonnes with output capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum. This is one of five spreaders in use on the site which have a total capacity of 110,000 cubic metres of material per day.

SY 1689 sets off with a load of overburden as the ground is stripped at the edge of the vast Jalainur opencast coal mine. In the background is the vast washery building and the white painted headquarters of the mine administration. The numerous coal seams are evident deeper into the pit.

The big pit at Fushun is always smoggy but on this occasion it was possible to see well into the hole. A steam locomotive is busy on a maintenance train whilst coal and spoil is handled by electric locomotives. Sadly the railways into the pit have now all closed.

Ice cold steam

My last visit to the immense Jalainur opencast coal mine was in January 2008 and coincided with exceptionally cold conditions. The cold air was falling into the pit and as we descended the temperature reached -35C. Of course this made for epic steam effects as many steam SY class locomotives worked their loads up and down between the levels. It was busy too!

At the Jalainur opencast coal mine a train is worked onto the spoil tips whilst in the background is the Lingquan power station. The 600Mw power station is operated by the China Huaneng Group which is the largest electricity producer in China with a market share of just less than 14%. The steam trains that served the nearby opencast mine and several deep mines have now been replaced with diesels and the opencast mine is now closed.

Another well below freezing shot at Sandaoling opencast coal mine in the far west of China. The electric face shovel is loading spoil for removal to distant tips by the JS class locomotive. Amazingly there is still steam hanging on at this mine towards the end of 2016.

The opencast coal mine at Pingzhuang was reaching the end of its life when I visited in 2008. The coal was worked from the pit in electrically hauled trains whilst maintenance trains were steam hauled. Coal production in the area continues from deep mines.

The early morning line-up for servicing was always worth a visit at the Xibolizhan end of the pit at Sandaoling opencast mine. The sun is just about to rise as a JS class locomotive crosses the many tracks leading to the spoil tips.

Memories of the huge opencast coal mine at Jalainur in the Mongolian Autonomous Region of China, close to the Russian border. Winter scenes there were invariably spectacular due to the very low temperatures which could fall as far as -40C. It is now all but closed with just a few lorries bringing the remaining coal out.

Power station and associated opencast coal mine viewed from the plane on a flight from Beijing to Manzhouli. There are so many of these coal-fired stations across China. I read somewhere that they open a new one every week.

JF 257 stand forlornly at the servicing point at Jalainur opencast mine. It was gone the next time someone reported from this remote site. There were several other JFs still in use here at the time, but their days were clearly numbered.

Electric excavator for moving the tipped material and steam crane for moving and maintaining the track on the spoil tips at the Jalainur opencast mine. Now sadly all closed and derelict.
