I removed the diesel pump of my Mercedes to renew the gasket between pump and engine. It was leaking oil. When I removed the diesel pump, it was clear why: the gasket had all but disappeared.

These protect the fuel injectors of a diesel engine against the heat of combustion, they also form a seal between the injector and the engine.
If you overtighten the injectors, the heat plates become very deformed, as you can see, and don't come out very easily. The heat plates can be used only once.
