These are about the only trees that grow in our area, the Ponderosa Pines. This one was photographed near Hog Lake.

Channeled Scablands

This was the area where we hiked last week near Fishtrap Lake. The area is known as the channeled scablands as is the area where we live, an area of thin soil, Ponderosas, ponds, coulees and long narrow lakes. We hiked part of the way along the west side of the lake and then over the prairie.

This is typical scenery of the area where we live known as the channeled scablands. The basalt outcroppings are one common feature and the only trees are the Ponderosa Pines.

This is part of the trail we hiked last week across the prairie west of our home. At this point it followed an old channel not far from Fishtrap Lake.

Watermelon Hill Fire

On our hike last week near Fishtrap Lake we hiked through an area that was burned in 2014 in the Watermelon Hill Fire. The fire burned about 15000 acres and the effects of the fire are still visible. Prairie fires are very common in our area and one of things we worry about when the summers are dry.

Lichens

Today's photos are of what we sometimes call "small nature," little things we see along the way as we are walking and hiking and stop to photograph, in this case some lichens on the branch of a Ponderosa that my wife noticed. If I am not mistaken there are three different lichens here, including the little patch of orange at the top, but I've not tried to identify any of them.

Note: Janet has correctly identified the orange lichen, I believe, as Xanthoria parietina, the Common Orange Lichen and I believe the green lichen with the fruiting bodies to be the Brown-eyed Wolf Lichen, Letharia columbiana. The third, appearing as blue-green scaly patches I can't see well enough in the photos and will have to look for it again.

Taken the same morning as the previous series of photos, a morning following a night of freezing fog, these photos were taken near Clear Lake, the lake near our home, and are of the Ponderosa Pines growing there.

Yesterday a grandson and I went snowshoeing at Mackenzie Conservation Area northeast of Spokane, Washington. We snowshoed to Newman Lake and back, stopping for lunch at Turtle Rock near the lake.

This was taken in the Catherine Creek Natural Area on the Washington side of the Columbia River. The tree in the foreground is a Ponderosa Pine, most of which are dying in the area from an outbreak of the Five-spined Ips Beetle, and the mountain in the background is Mount Hood in Oregon.
