In Australia voting is compulsory. This will determine the members of the national parliament, all of the lower house, House of Representatives (Reps), and half the members of the upper house, the Senate. The Reps seat here is Groom where 6 candidates are standing. It would be surprising if the incumbent was not returned. Senators are elected on a per state basis. This time there are 82 candidates for the 6 seats for Queensland.

Here, as in many cases, the polling place is a state school. Supporters of the various parties stand around hoping to hand a 'how to vote' paper to arriving voters.

This is a polling place at my local state high school. July 2016. See note.

11/07/16 the Opposition Leader has conceded and the previous Prime Minister is back in the job. Politicians are heading back to the national capital, Canberra, to get on with party activities, representing and governing. The poll is not yet declared as there are still a few undecided seats whose outcome can't affect the outcome.

31/07/16 the final lower house seat has been declared with a 37 vote majority with the opposition candidate claiming victory. Perhaps the Govt side will challenge in court?
