When I decided to work on a garden a couple of years ago, one of the things I wanted was pumpkins. I got lots of varieties and it was a lot of fun to watch them sprout and grow. Pumpkins grow on vines, which means tendrils! I love the way these look, and how incredibly strong they are! I captured this one clinging to the deer fencing that enclosed my front garden.

I meant to post my picture yesterday but my internet was out all weekend and we didn't get service back until yesterday morning. By the time we had internet again I was full to the gills with other things I needed to do, so I decided to post my picture today!

Before Halloween (October 31), I asked Steve to bring home a couple of pumpkins so I could take some festive pictures. I was delighted by his choices and got some really nice pictures of them (See the insets to see this pumpkin). One of the neat things about many squash varieties is that they will sit happily for weeks and weeks without rotting, so we have had these pumpkins for weeks now and they are in perfect shape. However, we would like to use them in cooking before they go bad, and so I looked up some recipes. I've never cooked with pumpkin before and I wanted to try something savory and different. I found a recipe for spicy Thai pumpkin soup that sounded wonderful. I found out what to do to prepare the pumpkin, and then cut it up and made the soup, which turned out so good that we wish I'd made a double batch of it! :D

I took some pictures of the inside and will post a couple of pictures sometime soon, but for now, I wanted to share this funny picture! Turning the pumpkin over, I found a one-eyed smiling face looking back at me!

Sometimes picture opportunities present themselves when you're not even thinking about photography! This morning I went downstairs into the kitchen and as I glanced out the window, I noticed the sunlight streaming in, bouncing off a cabinet and landing on one of our pumpkins. It was shining past our parrot's perch that we have attached to the window and casting a very cool, curved shadow over the pumpkin's surface. "Oooooo, LOOK AT THAT!!" I said to myself, and as I appreciated the light and shadow, it suddenly occurred to me that this was not an opportunity that would last forever because even as I looked, clouds moved over and past the sun, changing the intensity of the shadow. I ran for my camera an took pictures from different angles, and then a thick cloud caused the shadow to diminish and leave only a diffused light glowing on the surface. I looked at the different pictures and picked out my favorite image with the shadow, and my favorite with just a diffused light. What I love most about this pair of pictures is that the situation was totally unplanned. The pumpkins were sitting in that position from the night before when I pushed them out of the way for dinner preparation.

Diffused Light on Pumpkin

Here is the other version where a cloud was in front of the sun and created a diffused light. I would love to know what your opinion is...personally, I love the one with the shadow because the light and shadow are very interesting, but I also really like the warmth of this one. Any thoughts? :)

Texture on Pinky-Peachy Pumpkin

The texture on this pumpkin is really neat! I took a bit of liberty in changing the color to be brighter with more contrast, so if you compare it to the actual pumpkin, you'll see it's quite different than the actual soft pinky-peachy color.

The reason this pumpkin looks really weird...is because this pumpkin IS really weird. It's not orange, it's not yellow-orange, it's what you're looking at...kind of pinky-peach with splotches of olive green... it's one of the strangest pumpkins I've ever seen and...I LOVE IT!!!

Oh my, but I had trouble with my pumpkin pictures! The pumpkins are wonderful, but they are large and that caused me problems with creating proper bokeh. But it was really good practice for me, and this particular picture was a mistake! I forgot to adjust my aperture and when I saw that it was 20, I nearly deleted it...but at the last second I decided to look at it on the computer first. I'm really glad I did, because this is my sentimental favorite of my three pictures!
