Mount Rainier

This photo was taken from Paradise on the south side of Mount Rainier. The road to Paradise from the west is open all year, but to the east is closed in the winter and was still closed when I was there, in spite of the fact that we had a winter with about twenty percent of the usual snowfall in the Cascades. My visit was very brief - I went to check out reports of an orchid that had been found there at lower elevations near the entrance to the park, but did drive up to Paradise for some photos.

Sunbeam Creek

Sunbeam Creek is near Reflection Lakes in Mount Rainier National Park. Reflection Lakes are east of Paradise along the road to Steven's Canyon. I do not believe these falls are named and they were very difficult to photograph. I was standing on the railing of bridge when this photo was taken.

Hooded Ladies'-tresses

On August 22 and 23 we made a trip to Mount Rainier National Park. The weather could have been a bit better, but we have a wonderful time as we usually do and found plenty to photograph. We left very early and were in the park by dawn, coming in the from west. We made a brief stop at Kautz Creek and another at Longmire, but my wife stayed in the car and slept at both stops. At the second stop near the Longmire visitor's center and at the beginning oif the Trail of the Shadows I found quite a few of these native orchids, Spiranthes romanzoffiana, the Hooded Ladies'-tresses, blooming.

The first picture was taken from the north side of Mount Rainier and has Mount St. Helens in the background. The second picture is taken from the west side of Mount Rainier and shows the mountain lit by the rising sun. The third picture shows the east slopes of Mount Rainier in the foreground and Mount Saint Helens in the background. The first and third pictures were taken on flight from Denver to Seattle and the second on a flight from Seattle to Ontario, California.

Mount Rainier Morning

This was taken from White Pass, south of Mount Rainier National Park, as we traveled through the pass to visit the park. This was our first view of Mount Rainier early that morning from a viewing area along the highway. Mount Rainier is an active volcano in the Cascade Range and at over 14,000 feet dominates the area to the southeast of Seattle.

Mount Rainier and the Nisqually River

On our way home from Spokane last week we spent a day in Mount Rainier National Park. We managed two short hikes, though most of the trails were still snowed covered. This was taken on one of the hikes to Carter and Madcap Falls between Longmire and Paradise. Even here the trail was snow covered nearly half the way, and we had to watch ourselves carefully so that we didn't fall.

For those who do not know, Mount Rainier is an active volcano in the Cascades Range. It is one of a group of volcanic peaks that include Mount Baker, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams and Mount Hood. It is 14,410 feet in elevation (4392 meters). On a clear day it dominates the landscape to the southeast of Seattle. It is girdled with glaciers and receives huge amounts of snow each year.

Near Christine Falls

Taken near Christine Falls in Mount Rainier National Park. This is an unnamed falls caused by melting spring snow. Christine Falls are on Van Trump Creek and these falls are just to the east near the viewpoint turnoff. Last Light on Rainier

Taken from near the town of Yelm, Washington, after a day in Mount Rainier National Park. We drove out to see the setting sun on Mount Rainier and realized that it was especially from this direction that Mount Rainier's volcanic origins were evident. We had seen evidence of its volcanic activity in the hot springs near Longmire in the National Park earlier in the day. This photo is taken from the west, the photo below from the southeast early in the morning.

Old Mineral Baths at Longmire

Longmire, named after the family that ran a resort and spa there for many years, is on the south side of Mount Rainier National Park. These old mineral baths were part of that resort and are now part of the scenery on the Trail of the Shadows at Longmire. Mount Rainier is an active volcano and the Longmire area is full of hotsprings, mineral springs, and other activity, all the result of the melt water from Rainier seeping through the ground and heat.

This was photographed on West Road in Mount Rainier National Park and I believe it is the non-native vetch, Onobrychis viciifolia, or Sainfoin. If anyone knows better, I would be delighted with a correct ID. There were few wildflowers blooming in Rainier when we were there in May, and we only saw one plant of this beautiful wildflower.

Evergreen Violet

There are nine species of yellow violets that are found in our area and they are not always easy to tell apart, but I am reasonably certain that this is the Evergreen or Redwood Violet, Viola sempervirens. It was photographed along the Westside Road in Mount Rainier National Park this past spring. We were too early for most of the wildflowers, but did find these and a few others.

Corallorhiza mertensiana fma. pallida

Another of the orchids from our Greenwater hikes. This is the Western Coralroot, Corallorhiza mertensiana, and the pale form of that species. It is aptly named the Western Coralroot since it is only found west of the Rocky Mountains. It is leafless and without chlorophyll but variable in color, the stems ranging from grayish-white though yellow, tan, brown, pink and reddish-purple, and the flowers also coming in a range of colors and color combinations. The link below shows many of these different color forms and the picture one of the darkest forms.

Platanthera stricta

This, the Slender Bog Orchis, is another of the native orchids we saw while hiking in the Greenwater area to the north of Mount Rainier. The species is very common in our area, but I took the photo for the sake of the insect that was working the flowers, some sort of fly, and am hoping that it can be identified.

Piperia candida

The Slender White Piperia can be a tall plant. The few stems of these we found along a forest service road in the Greenwater area were nearly three feet tall. They were also very difficult to photograph in the strong breeze that was blowing and we got only a few good pictures. These were one of ten native orchid species we found that day.

Pine-drops

These are not the same saprophytes I posted a day or two ago. Those were Pinesap, these are Pine-drops, Pterospora andromeda. Like the others, however, they are nearly leafless and without chlorophyll and both belong to the heather family. The flowers are not yet opened, but the picture below shows some of the opened flowers. The photo is my wife's taken along a forest service road in the Cascades north of Mount Rainier.

I did not have a wildflower book along when I took this shot, and the lupines are hard for me to identify without a reference at hand. Photographed at about 5500 feet elevation in the Cascades north of Mount Rainier.
