Varanasi, ville éternelle

Varansi (Indian) - Depuis le départ de mon ami Raphael, pour un monde qu'il espérait meilleur ; j'ai du mal à passer à autre chose. En attendant de l'accompagner une dernière fois vendredi, je vais rester à Varanasi. Un hommage un peu décalé car comme je l'ai déjà écrit, il ne connaissait pas l'Inde. S'il n'était pas enclin à visiter ni ce pays, ni cette ville, il aimait que je lui en parle. S'il avait vécu plus longtemps, peut-être aurais-je réussi à la convaincre de m'accompagner en ce lieu chargé de spiritualité qui lui parlait.
Moi, en revanche, c'est la réalité faite de paradoxes et de contradictions qui m'attire dans cette ville. Nous étions différents, mais complémentaires.

Tu n’iras jamais à Varanasi, mon ami !

Varanasi (Inde) - Cette photo est dédiée à mon ami Raphaël qui vient de nous quitter à l’âge de 67 ans. Il n’était jamais allé en Inde car il craignait de ne pas supporter la pauvreté omniprésente ; particulièrement à Varanasi (Bénarès pour les Anglais). En revanche, ce pays le fascinait depuis la lecture du roman de Pierre Loti « L’Inde sans les Anglais ». L’écrivain décrit Varanasi comme un lieu de mystère et de magie qui semblent surgir des brumes du Gange. Il avait aimé les descriptions de Loti pour cette ville peuplée de personnages pittoresques, de sadhus et de fakirs qui semblent avoir transcendé les limites du monde matériel. Une approche spirituelle pour mon ami qui, s’il ne croyait pas en la réincarnation, espérait l’existence de l’au-delà.

Die Kapellbrücke in Luzern, Schweiz, ist die älteste überdachte Holzbrücke Europas und gilt als das weltberühmte Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Die im Jahr 1333 als Teil der Stadtbefestigung errichtete Fußgängerbrücke erstreckt sich heute über eine Länge von rund 204 Metern und verbindet die Luzerner Altstadt mit der Neustadt über den Fluss Reuss.

In der Mitte der Brücke steht der markante, achteckige und über 34 Meter hohe Wasserturm. Er wurde bereits um 1300 erbaut und diente im Laufe der Jahrhunderte als Wachturm, Stadtarchiv, Schatzkammer und sogar als Gefängnis.

Im Dachgiebel der Brücke befindet sich eine europaweit einzigartige Gemäldegalerie. Die dreieckigen Holztafeln aus dem 17. Jahrhundert zeigen wichtige Szenen der Schweizer Geschichte sowie das Leben der Stadtpatrone St. Leodegar und St. Mauritius.

In der Nacht zum 18. August 1993 zerstörte ein verheerendes Großfeuer einen Großteil der Brücke sowie viele der wertvollen Original-Bildtafeln. Dank präziser Rekonstruktion konnte das historische Bauwerk jedoch in nur acht Monaten originalgetreu wiederaufgebaut werden.

This little stone bridge is over the leat overflow at Quarry Bank Mill in Styal which was founded in 1784. The channel carried water not required to power the mill back to the River Bollin below.

Varanasi (Inde) – Le Gange n'est pas toujours aussi calme. En période de crues, il peut monter jusqu'à 10 mètres et emporter pas mal de choses sur son passage. Quand on voit la quiétude de cette scène, on n'imagine pas qu'un fleuve sacré puisse être aussi capricieux. Le problème avec le dérèglement climatique, c'est que le Gange va avoir de plus en plus de sautes d'humeur.

Traveling from Eidfjord to Bergen we made a number of stops, this at Bordalsgjelet, a narrow gorge through which the river Bordalselvi flows before emptying into Vangsvatnet (Vangswater). The gorge is near the town of Voss and there is accessible from the town via a short walk. There is also a small car park near the gorge from which the various viewpoints can be accessed. The main attraction is a narrow walkway built into the side of the gorge. We visited the walkway and the other viewpoints though it was raining while we were there.

On our way to Bergen we stopped at Bordalsgjelet, a narrow gorge near the town of Voss through which the river Bordalselvi flows before emptying into Vangsvatnet, There is a narrow walkway built into the side of the gorge and though it was raining, we went into the gorge and then to other viewpoints near the river's exit from the gorge.

One from the archives! We had hitch-hiked (those were the days!) along the Rhine valley from Mainz and had been just dropped off by the Rodenkirchen Bridge. This shot was taken from under that bridge looking north to the Südbrücke railway bridge and Cologne Cathedral in the distance.
