Whilst out with Bella on the "other riverside walk" I managed to get down the bank to a low enough spot to see the Blue Bridge over the River South Tyne from the upstream side. It's been too overgrown later on in the summer months, and too soggy during the winter.

The ice build up in the River South Tyne underneath Alston Arches viaduct, in the first week of 2026.
There might be a little bit of snow on there, but the ice is hiding some massive holes. No sign of any pancake ice ...

Ice waterfall over the weir in the River South Tyne, underneath the Alston Arches.
It looks like there may be a very thin sprinkling of snow over the top, but I don't think I can see any "pancake ice" twirling around.

Chunks of ice among the rocks poking up out of the River South Tyne, just downstream from the Alston Arches. Not a lot of water flowing in the river today, as it hasn't rained much for a few days.

screenshot taken from a relatively new webcam - on the south coast of the Isle of Man, west of Castletown. There are three webcams at the same site, this one looks out over the sea.
Managed to catch the spray from a wave breaking over the short stack of rocks just offshore, timestamped to early evening on Friday. 3rd October 2025 - so Storm Amy has arrived.

The twigs are the upper branches of the remains of a tree jammed into the rocks just past the bridge.

A small piece of [probably] demolition rubble found on the beach in the Outer Harbour at Whitehaven.
The remains of three house-bricks, held together very firmly by the mortar.

Tiny caravan being used as a base camp for a small family group visiting Wast Water in The Lake District.

The authorities have taken a leaf out of the Gwynedd Council / Snowdonia National Park's play book and made the road & verges up to Wasdale Head a clearway ie a no parking zone.
I can see that there has been too much damage to the roadside landscape from cars, including the problem of parked cars blocking up the passing places. A small number of parking areas are already provided, but I think more will be needed.

By the time we had walked along the beach, almost to the Rendezvous Cafe, it was noticeable just how many people - and their dogs / children - had come out for a wander.
The flat rocks do have pools, but normally very little in the way of marine life. This flat rock formation is known as a wave-cut platform, and is often hidden by sand. [Can't take a Geographer anywhere]

The cannon is "Big Tom" and dates from the John Paul Jones raid era of Whitehaven's history. It was originally sited much nearer sea level.
What I didn't really see when I was framing this image was the detail on the rock formation, but the "rock face" sort of jumped out at me afterwards. An example of pareidolia.

The incoming tide means the quite small waves are breaking over the rock armour [shown by the shiny & damp rocks]. Sadly I didn't manage to catch any images showing a decent amount of spray, it's also going dark as the sun set some minutes ago.

The formidable wall on the right is supporting the alignment of the South Tynedale Railway [formerly the standard gauge Alston to Haltwhistle branch line] and footpath that now shares the route.

The base of the wall has some extensive and heavy stone blockwork in place as flood defences, [aka "rock armour" - note the large metal "staples" securing the blocks]. The main stream here is the River South Tyne, just behind the camera there is a bend in the South Tyne and the confluence with the River Nent. Their combined flow, plus the bend, when in winter spate was a risk to the stability of the railway's supporting wall, and the sheds further to the right but out of view in this image. This is the little cove just southeast of Douglas Head, access would have been from what is now the Marine Drive, and the path down to the Lighthouse. I had some fun working out the location of this image.
[I strongly suspect that the photographer may actually be on the lighthouse !]

Several sorts of seaweed, and the rocks are also interesting - I think the grey strip maybe an intrusion.
The green seaweed was exceptionally slippery.
