I recently posted a photo of a fence at Bombo (PiP). This is the seaward side of the headland at the end of the fence. It is interesting for its geology, with a distinct change in the rock type visible, even better seen large. Of course, it also makes a good wall, so Happy Wednesday Wall, everyone.

I was surprised to see the spray from the waves creating a partial rainbow, as I walked along the rock shelves in the Murramarang National Park. Best viewed large.

At Kiama there is an area of volcanic rock which happens to have a natural tunnel leading to the ocean. In the right wind and wave conditions (as here), this becomes a 'blowhole' with jets of spray emerging from the rock.

Although it may appear that this rocking tourist catamaran is about to drive onto the rocks, it is actually heading into the little harbour at Bermagui - no doubt to the relief of some passengers. :-)

An improvised bench at a great spot for whale watching. Eden is famous for its whaling in earlier days (thankfully now finished) and now is popular for watching the annual whale migration. The PiP shows the view from the same spot. A Happy Bench Monday to all.

Looking eastward from Eden across the Tasman Sea, next stop New Zealand. Back in the 1800s, this was prime whale catching territory (thankfully no more).

Ocean swells breaking on a rocky headland. It was interesting to watch how the swells wrapped around the rock outcrop, arriving at each side from a different direction. Best viewed large.

250 years ago today (22 April 1770), Captain Cook and the ship "HMS Endeavour" came past here, mapping Australia's east coast and naming those islands the "Tollgates" and the waters inshore from them "Batemans Bay" (the latter very possibly after Nathaniel Bateman, under whom he had served on the ship "Northumberland"in Canada).

Apparently the local indigenous Yuin people, who had been here for some 50,000 years, were watching with some concern as the strange object went past on the ocean. It also is possible that Cook was not the first European along this coast, though that is the accepted history. Best viewed large.

It's your choice for the title - the ship is the "Trollfjord", itself named after the famous fjord directly ahead. I understand the fjord is navigable right through, but that wasn't going to work for our 16,000 tonnes of ship! It was at this "photo moment" that the ship reversed course. :-) HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Australian Fur Seals

Australian Fur Seals were almost wiped out in the 1800s for the fashion of wearing fur. They now are protected and numbers are recovering. Their territory is confined to the south eastern coasts of Australia, where they gather in harems in the breeding season (see PiP) - these are at Montague Island.
