Looking up into the roof space - the structure includes some massive timber beams. I presume most of these baulks will be Oak.
Although I can see some modern bolts, I suspect that joints and trenails would have featured in the original construction.

Looking south across what was the riverside bay platforms, you can still see the large slabs that made up the edge, the infill looks somewhat red in this image. The station roof [canopies] covers all but the actual running lines and were substantially restored in 2012.
The Station buildings, footbridge & canopies are all Grade II listed, as an example of Victorian Railway Engineering from 1978.

At the weekend, this area would be filled by flea market stalls - often, over 200 of them ... fenced off for safety [& revenue protection] from the operational area.

Looking out from our overnight accommodation. The gutter needs a good clean, there's a lot of vegetation growing in it !

Note: the traditional Yorkshire "pantiles" and the very shallow height of the individual bricks - indicating significant age. During the refurbishment, some walls have had to be rendered / painted to keep out the weather. The window and rooflight seem to be modern fittings.

Standing on the level crossing at the South Tynedale Railway, looking at the replacement overall roof. The back of Platform 2 is a full-length, high fence protecting quite a drop into the car park. {19visits HFF on 21Feb2025}

Under the new all-over roof at Alston. No.18 aka "Old Rusty" has been sat in Platform 2 as part of running around the passenger train in Platform 1, it will haul the next train to & from Slaggyford in a few minutes. It's normally the station shunter, but due to a problem it is deputising for the rostered steam loco.
[Focus could be better, apologies, I think the camera's setting wasn't correct]

After taking off the external cabling & junction boxes for the lighting, next we took off the canvas. F37 had two complete layers of coarse canvas, plus a considerable number of patches of various sizes, all held down with a huge number of small, rusted tacks. And it was absolutely filthy !

Two problem found in compartment three.
Quite a large rotten area in the narrow planks, in the more curved part of the roof profile. Again, timber treatment has already been applied to the affected area.
Secondly, the gap in the roof stick splice means the sections will need bolting firmly together.

The lighter coloured roof planks indicate a replacements made some years ago.
