These had an effect, but in my opinion were not sufficient to prevent the "new variant" from gaining some level of infections in the community.

The level of household mixing over the winter solstice / new year period will have more than wiped out the gains from that lockdown as can be seen by increased infections / hospitalisations / deaths now being experienced involving the "new Kent variant".

Hopefully, the rapid ramping up of vaccinations in the main high priority groups will take some of the sting out of the tail ...

Litter on beaches - and at other beauty spots - is something I really find hard to accept.

You have expended the time and effort to carry the full bottles, cans and packets to wherever you have consumed the contents. What is so difficult about packing the now lighter and empty containers back into the bag you used and taking them away with you.

This simple concept seems beyond so many tourists, and even some relative locals. The resulting mess is a hazard in so many ways.

The notion that men and women could use handkerchiefs to secretly signal their romantic intentions may seem far-fetched, but that's the idea behind this "Handkerchief Flirtation" list.

In fact, using hankies to flirt seems downright dangerous. You might accidentally drop your handkerchief on the floor and end up telling the wrong person, "We will be friends." Or even worse, you could draw your handkerchief across your cheek as you blow your nose, inadvertently saying, "I love you."

Despite the potential for miscommunication, flirtation lists like this circulated widely in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In addition to handkerchiefs, you could supposedly also use flowers, gloves, parasols, hats, cigars, pencils, and even buggy whips and handheld fans for covert courtship.
