Compressed chlorine storage at the INOVYN ChlorVinyls Limited Rocksavage chemical works. This plant mainly produces chlorine, caustic soda and chlorinated derivatives. I believe that these spheres are no longer used.

The signal was once used to control vessels using Weston Marsh Lock which links the Weaver Naviagation to the Manchester Ship Canal. The Weston Canal running across the image linked the Weaver to the docks at Weston Point and also the now derelict Runcorn and Weston Canal.

I think this is a gas-fired power station within the INOVYN ChlorVinyls Limited Castner Kellner chemical works. There is now a much large power station at the Rocksavage site but this one still seems to be in use.

The Salt Union saltworks at Weston Point, Runcorn, viewed across the empty Delamere Dock. This 850,000 tonne per annum vacuum salt plant was sold to Ineos Enterprises in 2006.

Products include:
Undried vacuum salt - a key raw material in the manufacture of chlorine and caustic soda.
Pure dried vacuum salt - an important ingredient for the food industry as well as for processes ranging from shampoo manufacture to animal nutrition and water treatment.
Granular and white tablet salt for water softening.
Packed de-icing salts.

Dereliction at the entrance lock to Weston Point Docks from the Manchester Ship Canal. The current owners, Stobart Group, have since demolished much of the old infrastructure on this area.

This derelict crane sums up the state of Weston Point Docks in the early 21st century. Hopefully the current owners, Stobart Group, will oversee a revival of fortunes for this historic port area.

Runcorn bridges

Currently there are two bridges between Runcorn and Widnes over the Mersey estuary. On the right in this view from the Widnes bank is the railway bridge of 1868, whilst to the left is the through arch road bridge that was completed in 1961. The road bridge replaced the 1905 transporter bridge that was off to the left. Another road bridge is now planned a bit further upstream in order to relieve congestion on the existing structure.

On a very cold night a few years ago I set out for a session of night photography around Runcorn and Widnes. The still conditions were ideal for reflections and the cold meant that I wasn't disturbed by unwelcome visitors whilst making the shots. This is the classic view of the road and rail bridges between Runcorn and Widnes over the Mersey estuary. The old transporter bridge was until 1961 just in front of where I was standing.
