This was Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's home in Sault Ste. Marie from 1826 to 1833. From here he ran the Indian agency for much of the Northwest Territory.

It was moved to its current location in 1979, which is roughly when I first saw the building. The Wikipedia link, above, is worth reading; the building's had quite a history....

Jim Oberstar, long a congressman from northern Minnesota, passed away yesterday. A good man.

This ship, long known as the Charles M. Beeghly, was rechristened in Oberstar's name in 2011 to honor that long congressional service.

This Catholic congregation was founded in 1668.

Just barely outside the frame is the Tower of History, which was originally built by this congregation but is now owned by the local historical society.

From MacArthur Lock, aboard the Soo tour boat Nokomis. The tower's attractive from this side, too. This view shows all the glass, which will bother serious photographers (but help control the cold, which is worthwhile). At least they left most of the upper platform open.

Overlooking the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The lower level is wheelchair accessible (and fully enclosed in glass, which will be a blessing on cold days but a problem for photographers). The upper level is mostly open.

Nokomis & CSL Tadoussac in the locks, just barely visible.

The observation deck's nicely executed and quite attractive. And enormous.

Interlake's steamer Herbert C. Jackson at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on Engineers Day, June, 2005.

The Jackson's self-unloader conversion occurred in 1975. Here we see the end of the unloader boom as the ship passes into Macarthur Lock.

The International Bridge to Sault, Ontario, shows nicely in the background.

Barge Sarah Spencer waiting for a break in the lock traffic at Sault Ste Marie in 1998. The blue paint job's pretty unusual; most photographs of this ship show her in a more conventional scheme.

At this time she was being pushed by tug Atlantic Hickory, a tug with a high pilot house that made for a real exotic look. (Sorry, no picture: I ran out of film.) Jane Ann IV, her current pusher, is less odd-looking.

For thirty-odd years this ship was called Adam Cornelius, and to my view was one of the best-looking lakers. In 1989 they chopped off part of her stern and inserted a tug; this happens to occasional ships, and keeps threatening to become common because the crew requirements are different, and less expensive for the shippers. Most of the resulting conversions destroy the ship's looks; not so with this one.
