Notation: Note(s) on the back read; "All of the streets here are very broad. Lenore Street"
"I'm gathering up all the stray cards & photos I can find, & I think they might interest you a little this the street (Lenore St.) I used to work on. Being all new houses & a nicer &newer part of the city, the roads were not finished then but they have been since and look fine. I marked the house I worked in. They all stand separate."

At the far end of the block, where Lenore crosses Wolseley, is the north east corner of Laura Secord School. Of particular interest is that the original bell tower can still be seen. At some point in its history (in the 1960s, I believe) the tower was dismantled.

Laura Secord School was constructed through 1912 - 1914, but the school was actually in operation beginning in August of 1913 with the 10 rooms that were finished at that point. That would indicate that this photo was likely taken 1913 or later. City records that show when Lenore street was first paved would be helpful in dating it more accurately.

Date: Posted. Handwritten note dated November 11, 1912 Sent from W. Lawrence in Glenora to Mr A. C. Ralston in Petersburg, North Dakota

Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified

Notation: Handwritten note on reverse reads; "I suppose you will be surprised to hear from me. It is a long time since I wrote you. am not very busy at present Mr Lindsay is teaching school and I mind the store All pretty well here sorry to hear Mr. Ralston is not very well. hope to hear better news next time. threshing all done here (?) prices for grains no dances or anything here All the young people in WPG your (?) W. Lawrence Hope you voted for Taft."

I came across an interesting note online that explains that Mr. Lawrence's name was William and that the Mr. Lindsay in his note was his son-in-law:

"Arthur Lindsay was born in Bolton, Ontario on December 22 1884. He was the
youngest son of William and Jane Lindsay. Arthur's older siblings were two
brothers and one sister. When Arthur was two weeks old his mother passed
away. In 1888, his father remarried and they had two additional children:
Roy and Elgin. Arthur graduated as a school teacher and taught for two
years in the country school known as "Purpleville". In 1908 he moved to
Winnipeg.

Arthur chose to teach in Glenora, Manitoba and on October 25 1911 he married
Gertrude Lawrence, eldest daughter of William and Jemima Lawrence. They had
two daughters Dorothy and Anne. Arthur passed away on November 15 1961."

(Source: listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/LINDSAY/2005-08/1124036626)

On page 159 of "Gleanings of the Past", a community history book of Glenora (http://manitobia.ca/resources/books/local_histories/026.pdf), I learned that Mr. Lindsay, in addition to being a teacher, owned a store in Glenora - apparently the one Mr, Lawrence, his father-in-law, was minding. On page 165 of this same book there is a very complete bio of Mr. Lindsay including the story behind his purchase of the store - and several pictures.

Date: Posted December 15, 1904 from Ronnie in Winnipeg to Mr. J. Beecroft in Hull, England.

Publisher / Photographer: W. G. MacFarlane #253

Notation: This is the only postcard image I have seen of Dufferin School. Constructed in 1896, it replaced a smaller school by the same name that had been built in 1883. The new school, on Alexander Avenue near Isabel Street, had 10 rooms and accommodated 540 students. It burned down in 1936 and was replaced by a larger building.

Date: Posted August 25, 1909 (Postcard was likely older.)

Publisher / Photographer: Published for "Gladstone (Man.) Drug Company by O. K. Press W'p'g."

Notation: First of all, I find this card to be rather spooky - with the raven-like line-up of folks on the roof. Putting that aside, I am speculating that this may have been the opening day for this school building - and that the workmen are poised up top.The pile of lumber behind the back right corner would seem to support this bit of conjecture.

The note on the reverse of this card, sent to Iowa, reads; "I got here at 1:00 today. Couldn't get to Birtle till tomorrow so I hired out to a fellow 14 miles South West of here to stook as the(y) call it here. Don't write to me for a while yet. I will let you know when I start for Birtle."
