Mary and Her Little Lamb

Mary had a little lamb
You've often heard it said
The lamb that Mary took to school
Was on a slice of bread.

Schultüten (school cones), miniature Easter baskets, and a stuffed first-day-of-school toy dog? Evidently these boys began their school career around Eastertime in 1966.

You Teach Each Little Elf More Than You Know Yourself

An insulting "vinegar valentine" for schoolteachers.

Schoolmistress

You teach each little elf
More than you know yourself;
And talk like a petticoat college;
To spank the little boys
Is the greatest of your joys;
'Tis thus you preside at the seat of knowledge.

A trick or treat photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

Stamped on the back of the photo: "Sta-Nu Prints. Jun 26, 1940, Hayes Photo Service, New Hope, Pa."

Although these kids look like they're ready for Halloween, the month (June) that the photo was developed and the warm day (note the open windows of the school building behind them) lead me to suspect that they were dressed up for a play or some other school activity.

A real photo postcard for the Schultüte - School Cone group.

Wikipedia explains the Schultüte traditon: "When children in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria set off for their first day in school upon entering first grade, their parents and/or grandparents present them with a big cardboard cone, prettily decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies, school supplies, and various other goodies. It is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little bit sweeter."

Stamped on the back of the photo: "Egon Sonntag, Photo-Atelier, Reinickendorf, Auguste-Viktoria-Allee 2."

A photo of children for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

An undated photo by Morrows Studio, Newport, Perry County, Pa., shows schoolchildren posing in front of a blackboard.

The expressions on the kids' faces range from angelic sweetness to stoic forbearance to utter impatience. My favorite is the girl sitting third from left in the front row (mouse over the image to see a close-up view of her and some of the other children). Her dramatically amusing appearance--with puffed-out cheeks, bulging eyes, and a hand over her stomach--either indicates that she's going to be sick or that she's ready for the photo session to be over.
