this ashkenazi cemetery founded in 1697 is not easy to find or see. though I doubt if any guard dogs ever existed . this ground off mile end rd. was paid for by benjamin levy, and expanded in 1733. most of the chest tombs have collapsed , and the hebrew lettering has faded.

this is the oldest remaining jewish ground in britain, dating from 1657, and being full by 1737. these jews were mostly merchants and refugees from the inquisition in spain and portugal, and it was oliver cromwell who gave the community the freedom to live here and trade legally. access is difficult.
