the 1890 mission block shields the later church of st.barnabas from sight. taken over by the evangelical group known as grace church, the mission buildings have been nicely refurbished to let, with the intention of turning dalston creatives into born again christians. there appears to be a link with the american cult known as sovereign grace ministries, and although the church seems to still be c.of e., they certainly use s.g.m. hymns and modus operandi, particularly when it comes to their way of raising funds.
.frankly whether they are or aren't tied formally to this particular unpleasant u.s. cult isn't terribly important, this group may be different but I wouldn't bet on it. most evangelical church planting groups are a fairly unpleasant authoritarian lot hiding behind words like grace or love, exploiting naive youngsters and making a lot of money out of it which they seem to spend in petty wars with each other. still, that's pretty much a definition of all religion, isn't it. you join up, you get what you pay for, and I'm sure some people will find it worthwhile..

the exterior of sir charles reilly's 1909-11 church is hemmed in by other buildings and hard to see in its entirety, this is the west end. reilly was a modernist in love with america, and this looks like a voysey factory or an a.e.g. turbine hall rather than anything else. perhaps he saw it as a machine for praying in.

the apse of sir charles reilly's 1909-11 church is only accessible by squeezing down the side of the building through a lot of rubbish. the line from here to guildford cathedral is pretty clear.

old photo of the interior as built by reilly in 1909-11, with the earlier rood in place pre- 1935, but with the post 1915 metal gates unfitted. the electric wiring for lighting seems to be in place, but not the pendants' shades, nor are there any seats, so perhaps this is c.1911 before consecration.

view east down charles reilly's nave of 1909-11, with concrete vaults. the screen is his too, though the rood was changed for a more ornate example in 1935 by tyson smith. pevsner expressed surprise at the screen , yet there were several possible georgian exemplars, from hawksmoor's christchurch to revett's ayot st.lawrence or wyatt's pantheon which may have provided inspiration for aspects of reilly's design.

very narrow low passage aisles with concrete vaults run down each side of reilly's church of 1909-11, his most industrial bits. at the time, even a sewer had more decoration; reilly was a hard line modernist
