Through the entrance lock to the King George V Dock at Hull. At the dockside is the 2,650 gross tonnage general cargo vessel GERD along with the tug SERVICEMAN which was at the time owned by SMS Towing Ltd. Also partly visible to the right is the SANTANA a general cargo vessel of 7345 gross tons. In the background is the 50-meter-tall biomass silo designed to store 1,800 tonnes of wood pellets imported from North America. Constructed using slipform concrete techniques, this automated facility can load up to 30 rail wagons with 1,500 tonnes of biomass in just 45 minutes for delivery to the Drax Power Station.

The southernmost of the two berths at the Tranmere oil terminal on the Mersey. The tug Svitzer Amazonas is seen tied up here covering the contract to have at least one tug available on the river at all times.

Verdi is a 1999 built oil & chemical tanker with a DWT of 3,045 tonnes. Seen here outbound on the Humber it was at that time registered in Antigua & Barbuda.The current registration is Cyprus.

Bromborough Wharf

Mersey Wharf at Bromborough, has two operational berths with a quay length of 230m and can handle ships up to 6,000 tonnes. Marine-won sand is landed and processed at the Eastham Sands facilities here. It is used as a source of aggregate for construction and other purposes in the local area. Dutch registered general cargo vessel Lady Harriet has been unloading steel onto the wharf.

The excursion ship Balmoral was built at Southampton by John I Thornycroft & Company for the Southampton, Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. Limited, more normally known as the Red Funnel line. It operated as a ferry to the Isle of Wight until dedicated car ferries were introduced and then mainly on excursion cruises work. In 1968 the vessel was purchased by P & A Campbell and moved to the Bristol Channel until the company closed its sailings in 1980.

Subsequently the ship was purchased for a failed restaurant project at Dundee and then passed to Waverley Steam Navigation Co. Ltd for operations around the Bristol Channel. In 2015, ownership of MV Balmoral was transferred to a new registered charity MV Balmoral Fund Limited, and she is now operated by their subsidiary, White Funnel Ltd. The ship has not operated since the end of 2017 and has seen major repair work and it is hoped to be back in service soon.

Here she is seen lying alongside the quay in Bristol Harbour.

Chemical tanker BRO DEVELOPER unloading in Roath Dock, Cardiff. The Danish registered ship is owned by Maersk Tankers. It was built in China in 2007 and has a gross tonnage of 11344.

Mersey Ferry Snowdrop tied up at Mode Wheel Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal. The ship will collect passengers later in the day for a trip to Liverpool.

Crude oil tanker Kanaris 21 discharges at the Tranmere oil terminal on the Mersey. The second berth on the right is occupied by the tug Svitzer Amazonas covering the contract to have at least one tug available on the river at all times.

The Malta registered Kanaris 21 was built in 2021 and has a deadweight of 156,921 tonnes,

Discharging soybean at the Royal Seaforth Dock in Liverpool. KAVO AETOS is a Bulk Carrier built in 2003 by Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu) Inc. as the BULK SCORPIO and is sailing under the flag of Marshall Islands. The length overall is 189.99 metres and width is 32.26 metres. The gross registered tonnage is 30,054 and deadweight 52,384.

Paddling at Llandudno

Paddle Steamer Waverley approaches the pier head at Llandudno.

PS Waverley is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world. Built in 1946 and entering service in 1947, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973.

Entering preservation in 1973 the ship now visits many ports and harbours along the south and west coasts of Britain each summer. 2024 saw a three day visit to North Wales and the Mersey with calls at Holyhead, Llandudno and Wallasey.

The 'Rhone' is an Ultra Low Emission Vessel designed for water injection derdging. It was built at VAHALI Shipyards in Serbia and launched in 2023. Outfitted by Kooiman Marine Group in Zwijndrecht it was commissioned in spring 2024 and is seen here at work keeping the channel open on the approaches to the Mersey.

On the first floor of the Lowther Hotel in Goole was used as a boardroom by the Aire & Calder Navigation Committee when in town. The walls are decorated by wall paintings showing various views of the Goole docks. These were largely hidden behind wallpaper until revealed a few years ago.

The paintings seem to date from before 1835 and it is suggested that they were created by a Mr Bromley in 1834. The Bromley family were ship owners and chandlers and there are several possible artists in the family. James Bromley, who was a packet boat proprietor in 1841 is the most likely. By 1851 had moved to London where he was the manager of a diorama in St Marylebone. This suggests involvement in art and landscapes, but the definite identity of the artist remains unproven.
