The Joline, an inland cargo ship traveling under the flag of the Netherlands and built in 2003. When I checked the details on it (link below), it was almost in the same location as when I took this picture, and was listed as needing a draught (depth for floating) of 2m (6.6’).

Interesting (to me) is that the pictures on the link below indicate that the vessel’s bridge (control room) is raised or lowered depending on the height of the cargo.

The Viking Tialfi, a ‘longship’ of the Viking River Cruises, docked in Cologne near the Rheinauhafen (later pictures). ‘Longship’ is a patented title used by Viking River Cruises to, apparently, create a link to the heritage of early seagoing oar and sail ships of the Viking people. This particular ship was built in 2016 and cruises between Amsterdam and Basel carrying a crew of 50 and between 95 and 190 passengers. Considering the drought that has hit the Rhine, I’m curious as to how shallow these ships can run. The link below is a promotional link but provides interesting information on the ship.

If you’ve followed my commentary over time, you would probably guess that the world of cruising on ships such as this is a mystery to me. Though I would enjoy a long trip seeing the Rhine from the river, I only want to do that if I could be on some sort of working boat.

A rather distinctive looking tower on the north bank of the Rhine hear the Hohenzollernbrücke, I could not find a description of the building itself, but the tower is for RTL television.

On the Rhine in front of the Basilica of St. Kunibert, looking downstream. At the time that I was there, the Rhine was still in the grips of a drought that had existed throughout much of 2018. River levels were so low that many boats had to operate at sharply reduced capacities.

Though a goal on the trip along the Columbia was to begin to try to get some understanding of commercial use of the waterway, I went for very long stretches of seeing no evidence of such use. This was one of the very rare instances of seeing a vessel in movement on the river.

Not terribly legible due to poor lighting (this is over-exposed), a sign describing the life of sailors on the Balclutha including routine actions that we would now label murder and torture. The poster describes the efforts at unionization for protection of sailors.The top picture, visible in larger versions of the photo, shows how very tight the quarters were on such ships. On the left, the tug Telco, built in 1938 and served as the tender for a Pacific Bell Telephone cable-laying barge in the bay. Per the park literature, it is "..one of the last small wooden-hulled tugs on the coast" and is still used by NPS. Though seemingly not particularly interesting as a picture, the story here is a valuable for describing the changes in the city. This is a Hicks engine that, per the park literature, was the most popular source of power for local fishing boats. The Bay area once led the nation in the production of such engines; this particular engine was built sometime around 1925. Most interesting for the pictures of this trip, Hicks Works was on Howard street, a part of the South of Market area where all of the older warehouses and factory spaces are being torn down and replaced with expensive high-rise apartments.
