Dwarfing the harbour and the ferries, as seen over the fence (rails on another ferry), this immense cruise ship stayed for only a day. Maybe best viewed large to fully appreciate the size. Happy Fence Friday and have a great weekend, everyone.

Some time ago, I posted an image (clickable PiP) of the Nella Dan hard against the rocky shore of Horseshoe Harbour at Mawson, maintaining her position with throttle at half power because her mooring cables had broken during a 200 kph blizzard. This is an image of her getting moving and being turned with the help of a boat, on 14 February 1966. In the foreground is the Mawson flagpole, flattened by the wind.

Tall ship "James Craig"

Long ago, I recall seeing the 1874 "James Craig" as a rusting hulk on a Tasmanian beach. A marvellous effort by the Sydney Heritage Fleet saw her restored to seagoing condition. It is now possible to take day trips on her. Best viewed large.

The full size replica of the 18th century ship "HMB Endeavour", the original of which mapped the Australian east coast under the command of James Cook. This is in the Australian Maritime Museum (see also PiP). Happy fence Friday and have a great weekend, everyone.

This is a model in the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum of one of the vessels which once operated coastal shipping in Australia, the TSS Merimbula. The ship was wrecked nearby in 1928 (see PiP for more details).

This former Sydney ferry, the "Lady Denman", is the prime display in the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum. It's significance is that it was actually built nearby in Jervis Bay, where two small boat building yards operated until the late 20th century. This ferry went into service in 1912, originally with a steam engine.

In 1826, the French explorer Dumont d'Urville visited Jervis Bay in his ship L'Astrolabe,while mapping the Pacific and parts of the Australian coast. He later explored in the Antarctic with it. The Jervis Bay Maritime Museum has this model.

The James Craig

The James Craig is a three masted steel hulled barque built in 1875. I remember seeing her, long ago, as a rusting hulk on a beach in Tasmania. Finally she was refloated, towed to Sydney, and restored by volunteers. She now is at the Sydney Maritime Museum and does regular trips out to sea. Much more info on her here.

It's your choice for the title - the ship is the "Trollfjord", itself named after the famous fjord directly ahead. I understand the fjord is navigable right through, but that wasn't going to work for our 16,000 tonnes of ship! It was at this "photo moment" that the ship reversed course. :-) HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

"Trollfjord" at Kirkenes

We travelled on the "Trollfjord" here seen at our most easterly point at Kirkenes, only a few km from the Russian border. In the past few days I have learned that Hurtigruten have now re-named the ship as the "Maud", after the first Queen of Norway, as well as Roald Amundsen´s 1917 polar exploration vessel. I gather she will now be used for expedition type cruises.

The hold of the Cutty Sark would once have been filled with tea boxes (as painted on the floor) when it was on the China Tea trade (see PiP 1 for some history on that). Later in her career she was used on the Australian wool run (PiP2), setting record times for the trip to the UK. As for the crew, some of the slightly more senior members lived in the cabin shown in PiP3, while the Captain and senior officers used the Mess shown in PiP 4. An 'indoor fence' is a little different! HFF and have a great weekend everyone.

On the Cutty Sark, the masses of ropes and rigging became even more striking. Inside the ship, I found a detailed illustration of it all (see PiP). It's amazing that the crew needed to know all these fittings by name and to be able to adjust them quickly. Best viewed large on black.

Cutty Sark

Built for the China tea trade and launched in 1869, the Cutty Sark was intended to be the fastest sailing clipper. She was up against some stiff competition from the likes of the Thermopylae. In their only direct race from China, the Cutty Sark lost her rudder and a new one had to be built and fitted, resulting in her losing by seven days. Unlike the Thermopylae though, she has been preserved. Now on display after being almost destroyed by a dreadful fire, a visit to her was a high priority. Second image in PiP and best viewed large.

In 1941, HMAS Whyalla was the first ship built in the industrial town of the same name. After it was retired from the navy, it was hauled high onto dry land (at Whyalla, near where it was built) and now forms the centrepiece of a maritime museum. HFF everyone, and keep warm in the north.
