The 12th century ossuary in Michael's chapel is one of the most interesting sights in Hallstatt (upper Austria). More than 600 artistically painted skulls can be admired here.

The skull painting was mainly done in the 19th century. This custom is still used in Hallstatt today. Hallstatt has the largest collection of skulls that has ever existed.

Das aus dem 12. Jahrhundert stammende Beinhaus in der Michaels Kapelle gehört zu den interessantesten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Hallstatt (Oberösterreich). Mehr als 600 kunstvoll bemalte Schädel sind hier zu bewundern.

Die Schädelmalerei wurde hauptsächlich im 19. Jahrhunderts durchgeführt. Noch heute findet dieser Brauch in Hallstatt Anwendung. Hallstatt besitzt die größte Schädelsammlung, die es je gegeben hat.

To the Climbing Wall

Entrance of the fixed rope route Emperor Franz Josef which leads upon the Hochblaser (1.771m, Steiermark, Österreich).

The hint with the skull is to be taken seriously. The climb requires a lot of courage and fitness, because it goes up 770 climbing metres in an airy south wall. Very often vertical, sometimes slightly backwards overhanging, no emergency exit. (Topo). To be honest: When I saw the wall, I preferred to do it like the Emperor. I stayed on the ground floor and was served in the nearby beer garden. At the age of 65, after more than 250 climbing tours, I no longer have to prove anything to myself.

Der "Wink mit dem Schädel" ist ernst zu nehmen. Der Steig braucht gute Nerven und ordentlich Kondition, denn es geht in einer luftigen Südwand 770 Klettermeter aufwärts. Sehr oft senkrecht, manchmal leicht rückwärts überhängend, kein Notausstieg (Topo). Um ehrlich zu sein: Beim Anblick der Wand hab ich es lieber gemacht wie der Kaiser. Ich bin unten geblieben und hab mich im nahen Biergarten bewirten lassen. Mit 65 Jahren muss ich mir nach über 250 Klettertouren nichts mehr beweisen.
