There are several of these dilapidated jetties, previously used by the local fishing fleet to land their catches. They now have new steel and concrete jetties to work from, but the seagulls and cormorants are grateful the old ones remain.

Our shingle beach is our sea-defence. A couple of times a year it is reformed with the shingle being moved from the eastern end where a breakwater allows it to be built up by the wind and waves. It is brought to the centre in large dumper trucks and then spread out, leveled and compacted by a bulldozer. This is why you can see ridges running along the beach.

The concrete blocks in the foreground are there to prevent the sea eroding the cliffs at the end of the Town's promenade. If that happened the sea could circumvent the sea wall and flood low-lying areas behind it.

This panorama is a narrow slice of a 35mm format photograph. The Rampion wind farm appears and disappears according to the lighting and to a lesser extent the level of the tide. It is being expanded over the next few years. It will extend further to the left of these turbines, further beyond and much further down to the southwest. This will double the current 116 turbines.

I tried to check with the system that logs movements in and out of Newhaven and up and down La Manche or the English Channel, but could find no record of this craft. It could have something to do with the wind farm. It is not the rig that has been sitting at the edge of Newhaven Harbour, because that still seems to be there.
