This is in the Qld Rail corridor but is part of DownsSteam's track. There is still points which have to be held where we access Qld Rail's track. See the PiPs for more details. This vintage petrol-poweredair compressor supplies a tool for drilling holes and driving screw in to sleepers. April 2024.

Pips 1 & 2 The old points lever and sleepers have been removed, the ground excavated a bit more and two new sleepers added.
PiP 3 Graeme is using an air-powered tool to drive a screw through a bracket which will hold the rail in place. The jack is supporting the rail at the correct height. This results in the sleeper being lifted from the ground by a few centimetres.
PiP 4 The first sleeper is in position. Andrew is drilling the pilot holes for attaching the second sleeper the the track. The rodding which will connect the lever to the rails is roughly in position.
PiP 5 Joe and Ian battling the air tool which didn't want to hold the bolt driver for the lever mounting screws. Eventually they won. Also note the addition of ballast which has been hand tamped under and around the new sleepers.
PiP 6 Final adjustments to the lever operation to ensure point blades are at the correct gauge and the spring mechanism is equally strong in either direction setting.

Today the sun was shining and so I was off up to Mow Cop Edge to get a shot. These are stone sleeper blocks from the Congleton Railway of c1807, now incorporated into a wall alongside the former route of this line. The track used was oval iron bars about 3ft long with a foot cast into the ends. The wheels on the trams were double flanged according to Farey in his General View of the Agriculture of Derbyshire vol 3 (1817). The line, which brought coal from Stonetrough Colliery in Staffordshire to a wharf on the outskirts of Congleton, had only a short life and was abandoned some time after the opening of the Macclesfield Canal in 1831

This opened up a wide market for the coal and led to a rapid expansion of output in the coalfield. It is likely that when first built this line used stone blocks rather than wooden sleepers to carry the rails although the advantages of the latter soon saw stone replaced with wood.

Bearing in mind how many stone blocks would have been required, it is surprising how scarce they are these days, presumably having been carried off for re-use in building works around the district or even further afield once they became redundant. Recently two blocks have been discovered at Poynton which look very much as if they were from the railway. This example bears the cut away for a metal chair which would have been attached to two oak pegs driven into holes drilled into the stone. There is also a suggestion of a possible second style of chair in the centre with only one hole for fixing. This has left a rectangular cutout across the elongated oval.

I have been unable to find out for certain about the use of stone blocks by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway and would welcome further information if anyone knows more about the subject.

I saw what looked like just an ordinary Rychlik (express) train coming the other way as I was on a local out of Prague, and then all of a sudden I saw Wagons-Lits blue and cream!!! By the time I got my camera out and set it for day shooting (it had 800 speed film for night shooting in it, and it hadn't been reset yet), it was too late, although I did get the rear end. This train probably was a Eurocity from Wein (Vienna) or some other important city, as Wagons-Lits don't normally provide equipment for minor more trains. I've also wondered a bit if this was not a Wagons-Lits service at all, but perhaps someone's private collection at the rear end of a Rhyklik. It makes an interesting story, anyway.

RZD, the Russian Railway, is a major customer, and their sleeper trains, equipped with Wagons-Lits stock, connect Moscow and St. Petersburg to many Eastern and Central European cities such as Prague, Budapest, Karlovy Vary, and of course Berlin, seen here.
