Skilled skiers can reach 100 km/h on this speed measuring track on the Seiser Alm. It's very comfortable that you don't have to brake at the bottom because you're riding up an opposite slope. (My time: only 84 km/h. I don't dare go any faster).

Könner schaffen auf dieser Speed-Messstrecke auf der Seiser Alm locker 100 km/h. Sehr angenehm ist, dass man unten nicht bremsen muss, weil man einen Gegenhang hinauffährt. (Meine Zeit: Nur 84 km/h. Mehr trau’ ich mich nicht.)

A now rare 2-seater chairlift. This one here - in the St. Johann in Tirol ski area - takes 20 minutes to transport guests 520 metres up. In icy winds, this is a dubious pleasure. There are plans to replace it with a faster 6-seater chairlift in 2026.

Eine inzwischen selten gewordene 2er Sesselbahn. Diese hier - im Skigebiet St. Johann in Tirol - braucht geschlagene 20 Minuten, um die Gäste 520 Meter hoch zu befördern. Bei eisigem Wind ist das ein zweifelhafter Genuss. Es ist geplant, sie 2026 durch eine schnellere 6er Sesselbahn zu ersetzen.

Normally, you ski down a ski slope like this one near the village St. Johann in Tirol where I live. After about 15 minutes, however, the fun is already over (at 920 metres altitude).
You get much more out of trudging up them in a race against the clock - with touring skis, snowshoes or crampons.

Normalerweise fährt man eine Skipiste wie diese in meinem Wohnort St. Johann in Tirol hinunter. Nach rund 15 Minuten ist der Spaß aber schon vorbei (bei 920 Höhenmetern).
Noch mehr Spaß macht es, sie im Wettlauf mit der Uhr hochzustapfen - mit Tourenskiern, Schneeschuhen oder Grödeln.

Snow cannons are more commonly used at lower altitudes. They have a higher output and thus create thicker snow cover more quickly. This picture was taken near the valley station of the mountain cable car to the Buchensteinwand (1,456 m) near St. Jakob (Tyrol, Austria).

In den unteren Lagen werden eher Schneekanonen eingesetzt. Sie haben eine höhere Leistung und schaffen damit schneller dickere Schneedecken. Dieses Bild entstand nahe der Talstation der Bergbahn zur Buchensteinwand (1.456 m) bei St. Jakob (Tirol, Österreich).
