Lake Magog and Mount Assiniboine

This photo shows Lake Magog, Mount Magog and Mount Assiniboine from the short trail to Lake Magog from the campground which was our final destination on our family backpacking trip. Myself, my son-in-law and his two oldest boys hiked to Mount Assiniboine from Sunshine Meadows ski resort near Canmore. Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park is in British Columbia on the border with Alberta, a border which we crossed several times while hiking. The peaks shown lie on that border.

Last Spring we traveled with our handiucapped son to Michigan so he could see his 92 year old grandfather. We spent a night in Rapid City, South Dakota, and had a little extra time to drive through Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We stopped in the canyon at Bridal Veil Falls to watch several ice climbers who were climbing the falls.

Spearfish Creek

Spearfish Canyon is one of the attractions of the South Dakota Black Hills. It is a beautiful drive along Spearfish Creek from the town of Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing. We were there last spring on the the way to Michigan just after a snowstorm.

These are the Upper Yosemite Falls from the trail to the top of the falls. Yosemite Falls drops a total of 2,425 feet (739 m) and includes the Upper Falls (shown here), the Middle Cascades, and the Lower Falls (both shown in the inset).

This was typical of our winter. We had our first snow in November and did not see the ground again thereafter. For the first time since we've had enough thawing to uncover the ground and it is supposed to thaw all week.

We have had a long and hard winter. It began late November with a blizzard that brought over 60 cm of snow and we have had snow on the ground ever since. We had snow twice last week, about 30 cm the first time and 5 cm the second time. We've also had very cold temperatures part of the winter and a lot of freezing fog. These photos were taken on one of my daily walks near home and with my old 7D which I've been using since I wrecked my camera.

Taken on an October, 2020, hike to Herman Saddle with family members. There was a lot of early snow that autumn and we hiked through the snow.

Cutthroat Pass

This was Cutthroat Pass when we hiked it last autumn. The trees are larches which we had gone to see in their autumn color. The rocky outcrop on the right is where we ate our lunch of hot soup and coffee. Though cold we climbed up to the top of the outcrop and enjoyed the view while eating.

The view west from the Cutthroat Pass trail in the North Cascades. The peak on the left is the Golden Horn. We hiked the Cutthroat Pass trail last autumn in spite of the snow and cold.

Mount Baker from the Park Butte Trail

Last October my wife and I hiked the Park Butte Trail near Mount Baker. We hiked under a heavy cloud cover most of the way and could not see Mount Baker, but as we hiked back out the day began to clear and Mount Baker became visible. Baker is the double peak on the right and the peak on the left is Colfax. When we climbed Baker in 2014 we came up through the saddle between Baker and Colfax and then up the ridge and across to the highest point.

Twin Sisters

When we hiked the Park Butte Trail last October this was the view of Twin Sisters to the northwest. We hiked under a cloud cover most of the way but the day began to clear as we hiked back out.

Hog Lake

Last week we hiked an afternoon at Hog Canyon Lake, only a few miles from our home and one of our favorite spots for a short hike. After hiking down to the lake we visited the falls. There was not a lot of water and that was still frozen, but the falls were beautiful. From the falls we hiked the cliffs on the west side of the lake and then watched the sunset. The lake was frozen and though we saw no one there were places on the lake where people had been ice-fishing.
