Where Two Waters Become One

At Devín in Bratislava, the Morava River meets the Danube, creating a striking contrast between their waters. The Morava is often noticeably muddier and more brownish, carrying fine sediment from its drainage basin, whilst the Danube can appear clearer and more blue-green.

The two waters do not mix immediately. Differences in flow, temperature, and sediment allow the contrasting colours to remain visible for a while before gradually blending downstream. This creates the distinctive two-coloured water effect that can be seen at the confluence, especially from above.

The Morava also forms part of the Slovakia–Austria border here, making the meeting of the two rivers both a remarkable natural sight and an important geographical landmark.

Olympia was the sanctuary of Zeus in the northwest of the Peloponnese. It was the site of the ancient Olympic Games. The excavation site is vast and complex. The ancient author Pausanias mentions about seventy temples, some of which have been reconstructed.

The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. The first games took place in 776 B.C. Participants and spectators from all over Greece took part. They were held continuously over 293 Olympiads until the Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games in 393 AD, as he considered them a pagan cult.

Aktuell blühen bei uns die Roßkastanienbäume. Die großen Blütenstände, die wie Kerzen nach oben zeigen sind im sehr gut anzusehen. Leider werden die weißblühenden Kastanien von der Rosskastanien-Miniermotte, einem Kleinschmetterling befallen. Das ist auch bei uns so. Die Bäume bekommen teilweise im Sommer schon braune Blätter, so daß man meinen könnte, es ist schon Herbst.

Die Fraßgänge (Minen) der Larven führen zu einer schnellen Braunfärbung und damit zum langsamen Welken der Blätter schon im Sommer. Dies führt zu einer Schwächung des Baumes, da die Photosynthese unterbrochen wird. Die Bäume können weniger Nährstoffe aufnehmen. Sie verlieren auch ihre ästhetische Qualität, zumindest Monate früher als ohne Befall durch die Rosskastanienminiermotte. Bisher ist allerdings noch kein Absterben der Bäume aufgrund des Befalls durch die Rosskastanienminiermotte beobachtet worden, was anfänglich befürchtet wurde. Jedoch existieren auch noch keine Langzeiterkenntnisse über deutlich mehr als 20 Jahre.

Aus diesem Grund wird hier bei der Neupflanzungen auf rotblühende Kastanien zurückgegriffen, weil diese nicht von diesem Schädling befallen werden.

Was aber die starke Blüte der Kastanien betrifft, so läßt sich vermuten, daß es eine reiche "Kastanienernte" in diesem Jahr geben könnte.

They're often on this pole top in winter on a rural street outside Ottawa that I won't name or give directions to since in recent years there's been crowds having a social event at the pole bottom bothering and even baiting the owls. Given the crowd there this day, I was far away with an a68 + Minolta 200 f2.8G + matched 2xTC. Improved with Topaz DeNoise.

There's always lots of robins here in March and April, and they are a welcome sight. Canon T2i + a Canon 400mm f5.6L that I had for a very short time. Can't take pix without stabilization, hands too shaky. Some color noise on its back. Look for the single raindrop. Improved with Topaz DeNoise.

Taken in a gap in an old railway tie from the Canadian Northern line in a rural area northwest of Ottawa just after Canadian National abandoned it and pulled up the rails and ties in 2015. The line had been used for 99 years. Macro shot makes the ice crystals look big. Minolta AF macro 100mm f/2.8, post in Corel PaintShopPro and Topaz DeNoise, mostly to remove the purple fringing.
