The House of David was a religious commune in Benton Harbor, Michigan, whose members performed in touring bands (like the one above), played on baseball teams, and ran an amusement park that featured miniature trains (like the ones below). Benjamin Purnell (see below) and his wife Mary formed the group in 1903.

Clara Rousby (1852?–1879), a British actress who played Joan of Arc and other roles on the London stage, in a hand-tinted CDV by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company (see backmark below).

The musicians ("All Stars") and caller ("Coleman," with megaphone) for a dance that evidently took place in Augustaville, Pennsylvania, in 1933.

"J. H. Kanarr, professional hypnotist, Lancaster, Pa. Hypnotism thoroughly taught. Charges reasonable. Diseases cured without medicine. Public and private exhibitions given."

Beverly Wilgus (Photo_History) posted an unused copy of this card on Flickr (see Blank Business Card for Professional Hypnotist - c. 1890) and speculated that the cards may have come from a nineteenth-century hypnotism school. In fact, I believe that the professional hypnotist cards originated with Lew Alexander Harraden of Jackson, Michigan, who offered mail-order lessons in hypnotism under the name "Prof. L. A. Harraden" in the 1890s and 1900s.

Although J. H. Kanarr probably purchased one of Harraden's mail-order courses, it's doubtful that he ever actually worked as a "professional hypnotist."

I haven't been able to locate any information regarding this jazzy bunch of musicians. "Susquehanna," though, suggests an association with the Susquehanna River, which flows through Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland. Or perhaps they were students at Susquehanna University, which is located in Selinsgrove, Pa.
