The Old Maid

The folks who settled Eaton County, Michigan, called the swamp that covered much of Windsor Township "The Old Maid Swamp." Nowadays, to the extent it's called anything, it's the Secondary Complex Marsh or (if you're an old state employee) Lake Austin. At least in this corner of the bog.

I think we should resurrect the old name....

Despite the substantial headframe on the mine's site, this mining location is dominated by the crusher/loader complex which broke the ore into manageable pieces and loaded it on trains. This is the ore loader.

My father walked beaches, so I grew up walking beaches. Mom would pack a lunch, we'd pile in the car and head to South Haven or St. Joe or wherever. We'd walk, sometimes for hours.

Then for a long time I didn't walk beaches.

Now I walk beaches again, though not as often as I'd like. This one happens to be Muskegon State Park.

Explored (#50 on Wednesday, September 19, 2007). Thanks! (No longer in the top 500. Explore is mysterious.)

Shot from the breakwater at the end of the channel at Muskegon, looking at the small beach within the larger breakwater which protects the harbor. I particularly like the peculiar clouds, which are probably more visible in the larger sizes.

It was a glorious day at the beach.

This is at the start of the trail which took us down to Lake Superior from the campground. I've been taking pictures more or less like this for years; most of 'em have been abject failures. This one came out pretty much like I'd hoped.
